I am trying to decide between two lens and wonder if anyone has experience with both. I have an Olympus OM 5 M II. I do most of my shooting with a 17 - 100 Olympus Pro lens and need more reach on occasion. I am trying to decide between the Olympus 75-300 and the Panasonic 100-300. Unlike my pro lens the Panasonic which has in lens stabilization will not sink with my camera stabilization to the best of my knowledge. The Oly lens has no in lens stabilization so not an issue there. The Panasonic lens has dust and splash proof construction which my camera has as well and the Oly does not. The Panasonic lens is also a little faster.

If it concerns you, then turn the stabilization off on the Panasonic.

I guess the panasonic 100-300 mm is a superior Lens and the Image stabilization on the Lens is a great help...I have noticed that at the longer Focal lengths the IS on the Lens is more critical than any in body image stabilization...I have checked this aspect by turning off IS in the Lens and the difference is huge and immediately noticeable...This lens is quite compact and Light and suitable for easy handholding and it does capture great images in good light...I am sharing a few snaps here to help you decide...I guess the Panasonic 100-400mm has more reach and is sharper throughout the range but then it is heavier and pricier.

Warmly recommend the following youtube videos by Terry Lane reviewing the panasonic 100-400mm Lens wherein he compares it with the Panasonic 100-300mm lens...He uses the Olympus OMD Em1 II paired with these lenses....Please check https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0po7jYpMCMo ...he has also reviewed the Panasonic 100-300mm lens here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwjCtNLSBe4 Hope this helps you decide

I have had the Panasonic/Leica 100-400 for 3 or 4 years now and it is a fantastic lens. I use the Olympus EM 1 Mark ll and it is my go to system for my wildlife photos. You can see samples shot with this combo here: http://www.facebook.com/RayReederPhotography

I use the Panasonic 100-300 on my G9. For the money and reach it's hard to beat.

I have the same camera(s) the 5 II & III and the 75-300 lens. Because of the Olympus’s internal stabilization, a stabilized lens Isn’t necessary. I love the resolution and find the reach is just what I want. I haven’t found the speed of the lens to be a problem — I only use it outdoors. It’s also light enough so that I can wear it around all day without a problem.

The 100-300 works fine with the Oly body. You just don’t get Dual IS II. Use the Olympus’ IBIS. Or, turn IBIS off and use OIS in the lens.

OIS usually is better at long focal lengths, so try both (separately).

I have the 100-300 on my om10.
I use the OIS lens setting. And silent shutter(less vibration).

I have the E-M -5ll, and all Olympus lenses, except I took the chance on the Lumix 100-300mm lens. I can honestly tell you that it is a fantastic lens for travel, and very sharp. You will love it!

Indeed it works fine on an OLY body. I have this lens and it works just fine on my Olympus camera.

I am not a Panasonic camera user, my cameras are made by Olympus (EP-5 and Em-10 Mk II) but I use Panasonic lenses with the Olympus bodies. I have no issues.

I do not own the Panasonic 100-300 f4-5.6 OS Mk II and I have never used one I have seen many of the images made with the lens and indeed the sharpness and resolution are outstanding for a lens at this price. The 100-400 Panasonic-Leica lens is far superior from what I have seen but it is said to be heavier and obviously much more expensive. One thing that is evident and bothersome with the Panasonic lens are the chromatic aberrations. I do not know if Olympus has incorporated in the software of their cameras a means of reducing or eliminating this problem. Today the majority of editors can do a great job. I do not own or used the lens so I cannot comment on those results.

From what I have seen the Panasonic seems like a great buy, specially if the chromatic aberrations can be controlled with software.

The general consensus is that the 100-300 is not as good as the 100-400 but is a lot less expensive. The 100-400 zoom is good but still not as good as 200 or 300 prime.

Thanks for all of the very helpful feedback folks! It looks like the Panasonic lens gets the nod. I'm sure that the 100-400 Leica lens is superior but I don't need that much reach and there are the cost and weight issues.
