I have seen an advertisement that states that there is a device that will search my computer and collect all my photos (no matter where they are being stored) and will load all into this device for safe keeping. Can anyone give me information? Are there several brands of this device or is this just a waist of my time and money?
Not 'Sure', but I signed up with Google Photos, and it did exactly what you asked about. - It searched several PC's and laptops, then added every photo on them to the 'Collection'.
(The only thing then, was discovering that I had almost 100GB of photos, and had to buy additional storage,
($12.00 a year for 100GB)
All in all, - I like it and it actually Organizes your photos by Year,& Date, and - - if you have a Google Home Nest, you can ask it to 'Play Photos from say, 2012', and it will act as a Photo Frame, and play that years pics!
Does it filter any way or just any file with a certain name extension? I could see it gathering up files that are not necessarily wanted...

What you are looking for is photo stick or photo keeper. These would be for VERY TEMPORARY USE, only to locate and move to a hard drive (IMHO). They have a program on them to do exactly what you can do very easily manually.
For Windows, here is the way. Search and find with explorer. Then select and copy to a hard drive. Then delete from original. Once copied, you can sort by date then move all photos of the same date to a folder by that date. A way to start organizing manually. I am talking Windows here, since you do not mention machine type. If Apple I don't know.

Finders find ALL photos. If you want to just find certain ones, the explorer. (See my other response) and just look for, say png. That's the easiest way, at least for me
You can do a search for jpg to find all the JPEG images on your computer. I use a free program called "Everything" that does a great job. I just did that and got over 60,000 hits - not all my photos, though.
I've seen that device you're talking about, and some people here have it and like it.

Everything from
www.voidtools.comhas been my go-to "finder" for years. From simple searches to complex (even Regex, an art form in itself), Everything does it. Well documented.

Why bother with just the photos? Just back up the whole drive. It's simpler and it will contain all your pics and all your other data.
The Mylio organizer will do something similar to that for all your devices, phone, computer, etc, and sharing locations.
