Just got Affinity.

Hello all.
I have done just enough Post processing to get me into trouble.
So why not start at the begining?
I started with YouTube, with the Software writer for those new to Affinity.
I got 3 Raw & 1 Jpeg loaded. When I went to X them out
I was warned that they, the pics were being developed. You have to hit OK.
When I used EXIT it said, if I did want to cancel it was not recoverable.
I let the program work for 20 minutes then said cancel to 3 Raw & 1 Jpeg file.
What did I do wrong? Oh I plan on spending some serious time on U Tube.

Maybe I can help.
The sequence of moving an image through Affinity if you start with a raw file:
The file will open in the Develop Persona. You have to either commit and click the blue button Develop or Cancel. Affinity won't let you just "X" out without verifying either Develop or Cancel.
Your raw file data has to be converted into an RGB image for any further editing in Affinity.
Before you click Develop you have a set of basic tools in the Develop Persona that you can use to get your image looking basically as you want it.
When you click Develop the raw conversion is done and your RGB image is opened in the Photo Persona. You now have access to the full suite of Affinity's processing tools.
You image however has not been saved yet. If you try and close Affinity you'll get an image not saved warning. Affinity has it's own working file format that will save your editing work. If you select Save from the file menu AP will default and save your photo as an afphoto file. That's a good thing to do but you still don't have an image to for example post on the Internet.
Save your photo in the afphoto format and you can open that later and find all your work there. When you're happy with the image select the Export Persona and there you can save a JPEG or PNG version of your photo to share.

I don't see why not as long as you give your new version from Affinity a new file name.

I would recommend the Affinity Photo Workbook. For me it was the way to learn - workbook along side my computer. It is a wondeful book well written and well presented. A top quality publication. Held my interest all the way through.

Appears that new is $50 + shipping/handling. Whooo-eee!
https://affinity.serif.com/en-us/photo/workbook/Check amazon.com for used copies (there is a kindle version of a different publication for $10), and maybe our members have other resource ideas.

Google Affinity Photo Workbook - Serif have a 40% discount offer in UK until October = £22.99. Probably a similar offer in US.
I second the recommendation for the Affinity Photo Workbook. I have found it very useful and worth the cost. Other good sources of AP information: 1. Affiniy Forum - lots of answers there. 2. Affinity Revolution. This is a online course not from Serif but I believe affilitated with them in some way. At least promoted by Serif. The cost is low. 3. Affinity Photo Manual.pdf Free (600+ pages), huge. Hope this is of some help.

Perhaps however, I believe Linda knows all.
I once thought that Paint Shop Pro was Magic & indeed it was to me in 2002.
I love this program, & now with the 644 page all about Affinity I am in heaven.
My first picture this little Tree Frog was sitting on a blue top & stood out well.
Not to easy to see on trees it stands out well on the blue.
Am I done ? No not until I make the corner tag ( White ) blue like the larger
background. Now I know it's easy for Linda however I am clueless right now.
But I will do it with this Magic program.

It's delightful to see you enjoying your new acquisition and the discovery of post-processing! I, however, am not nearly as proficient with pp as many of this section's regular contributors and many, many overall on UHH.
Best on your journey!

You sure helped me along the way & I thank you.
One basic most important thing I learned was to treat
PP as you would making a great stir Fry.
Do as little as possible, also don't add the Kitchen sink
into your stir fry Shrimp / Broccoli, a few things to make
it taste great & stop there.
I know, always shoot the perfect picture then if you
need help use with moderation.
Oh I did find a way to fix my picture, then export it to
Picasa it works great.
