Auto focus generally focuses on the object that is closest to the camera. That's why I use a single spot in the center of the viewfinder and BBF.

I had it set on a tripod with full screen auto focus... toggle switch.. these little finches are too fast to catch in flight free handed.. (to me).. so I rapid fire when they fly in... crop to suit what I catch later... it's interesting to see what all is hanging around...
The problem with "auto focus" is that the camera doesn't really know where you want to focus,
it guesses...
