Anyone know if the Nikon 500mm PF lens is available anywhere ? I am looking to buy a new one and all the stores online are sold out and backordered. Thanks
Still? Have they ever really made any?

Yes they have made the Nikon 500mm PF lens, as a member of Nikon Professional Services, I got mine last year. And all I can tell you is this, THEY ARE WORTH THE WAIT. SHARP, SHARP, SHARP.
In fact, this lens is the only reason I have not gone totally to Sony. Yes I have some Sony equipment, but Sony has nothing like the 500 PF.
So, I am using the best that Nikon and Sony offer for wildlife photography. I look forward to more competition as these two duke it out for supremacy. Canon is my opinion is being left in the dust. Good riddance.

I waited 6 months and got mine two months ago.
After sitting on the waiting list at a couple of major retailers, I was able to pick one up a few months ago at a local camera shop. I would check around and see if any of the "little guys" has one in stock. I am assuming that production has likely slowed down in this current environment.
And I agree . . . it is worth the wait.
I want to pair the 500 PF lens with a D500 body. I was first considering pairing it with a mirrorless Z6 body. But looks like it may not be good for what i intend to use it for mainly birds and wildlife. I think D500 would be better for that. Let us know what my fellow hoggers think.Thank you.

I can't decide if the D500 would be better or cropping from a D850.

Been waiting a few months for one, I'm on the notify list at B&H, Adorama and a couple local camera stores. Someone here had posted he acquired one at his local camera store a while back. I would just call around and you may get lucky someone has one in stock. Good luck, if you find two, let me know.
I got mine from Midwest Photo Exchange this year. They were getting one per month on average and had only two back ordered. I got mine two weeks after ordering. Make sure you give them a deposit since that moves you up on the list.
Thanks Mr. Elliott. I will check out with Midwest camera.
I ordered my 500mm PF lens thru B&H in August 2018 and received it in July 2019. My DSLRs include two D500, a D750 and a D810. I put the 500mm on the D500 and the combination is superb. Lens is super sharp, and with the D500 at 10FPS, this is a great combo for wildlife and birds. The other D500 is married to my 200-500mm lens. It was worth the year wait IMO. Hang in there, and you will not be disappointed once the brown truck pulls into your yard.
Thank you Dave. My thought is the main reason being the lightweight and picture quality. I don't have to lug around a heavy lens, tripod etc. I can shoot BIF hand holding with good sharpness and details with this lens. Also in these days of air travel baggage restrictions, i can take it with me as a carry on wherever i plan to go. I am going to order it. I have the payboo card with B&H and will order it and wait. Will definitely be worth it.

There was one for sale on Fred Miranda a day or 2 ago.
I just got mine from B&H a few days ago. It was on back order for months and I had actually forgotten about it. It was a surprise to receive it. Still sitting on my table unopened as I'm debating if I should actually keep it, given the "days of Covid 19" and no ability to get out and around. Reading this thread may help me to decide. I do already have the Nikon 200-500. I rented one originally to see if I liked it. You, the OP, might want to rent one while you wait for yours to arrive.
