I haven't started shooting people, YET!, but like I told the fellow who wanted to stand right next to me in the check out lane, "you can either go for social distancing or Smith and Wesson distancing, your choice." He was grumpy about it but he did back off.

For people who want traditional group photos (weddings, class picture, etc) this is an opportunity for post processing experts. Take individual photos, or loose groups like the farm wedding, and assemble the people closer together In a composite with your computer skills.

To that I would add that restrictions are probably going to be eased in the near future, before they are lifted altogether (which may be in the not-so-near future). During that relaxed phase reassurance will be key. My suggestions would be to avoid shooting in small, poorly ventilated studios and install ionisers and UV lights. Even if those last two have limited effectiveness they will have a reassurance factor that you can bring to your customers' attention (purely as a precautionary measure). And maybe it's time to see that 70-200 as a more legitimate option for a portrait lens.
To that I would add that restrictions are probably... (show quote)

The 70-200 has always been a portrait photographer's friend! That entire range is most appropriate for portraits on a full frame or 35mm camera. It's 35-100mm on Micro 4/3, or 50-150mm on APS-C (close to those numbers counts).

Los-Angeles-Shooter my last commercial session was on February 22nd 2020... I closed my studio immediately after that... btw, my long time best friend recently passed her NCLEX-RN exam (February 18 2020) and was immediately hire as an ICU nurse... I've been focused on researching current technologies on mechanical ventilation for her... She's doing 12 hours shifts with intubated and sedated on propofol, fentanyl, and versed covid19 patients... these patients are seriously in harms way... the complexity of her mission is mind boggling... and she has to provide telephone support to her patients love ones... If you think covid19 is a harmless flu like "cold" you need to rethink that.

In the news today (05-20-2020) LA, Chicago and Washington DC are the current remaining "Hot Spots". Since my market area is Washington DC I'm a long ways from opening my studio... However it is providing amply time to come up the curve on mechanical ventilation for a new ICU nurse... Bottom Line? it's not ventilators that are in short supply it is highly skilled physicians, ICU nurses and respiratory therapist that are critical to outcomes...

I'm actually rather amazed at how naive UHH members are about the seriousness of this pandemic... covid19 is not going away until a vaccine is finally available... it is generally accepted that it takes 60% to 70% of a population with antibodies to develop an effective "herd" immunity... the US is currently at 10% to 15% and even then, it is still uncertain if antibodies actually protect against reinfection... and for how long...

The good news is that in my community in NOVA masks are being worn... and social distancing is being aggressively supported... the only exceptions are young adults who have no clue... and the compelling reason that they are drafted into the armed services in times of armed conflict... their "No Fear" mentality works well for those who would send them into harm's way...

Please folks help to protect our healthcare workers who risk it all everyday at work... They are exceptionally difficult to replace... photographic studios are not an essential industry... and never have been... same with most all the "Arts" which will unlikely return anytime soon... I have contingency plans for moving forward... suggest those who shoot commercially do likewise...

Hope this helps Los-Angeles-Shooter or is at least food for thought...
I wish you well on your journey... and please stay safe...

Recently I read a story about a photographer doing "front porch portraits." She scheduled the shoots and photographed people, individuals or families on their porches or outside their homes, while observing the social distancing rule. And in my neighborhood a photographer is shooting senior portraits outdoors where it is easy to maintain the social distance.

This is a way to go.

Several photographers in our town have joined together in a similar project. The photos are made available to download/print and will likely be put in a slideshow at some point down the road. The families being photographed can make an optional donation to a group in town that was set up to purchase meals from local restaurants to be delivered to area hospitals.

Record the image or expose the film. Cull edit the files or negatives or transparencies...

These are terms used by professionals in labs and itinerant studios. Kodak popularized them in the pro community in the mid to late 1990s as they developed digital sensors, cameras, printers, scanners, and first KPIS and then DP2 software. I first heard them at one of their summer conferences for professional lab personnel. I was developing digital products for a school portrait lab then (1997 to 2000).

Before that, many in my former industry would never use 'shoot' to describe the recording of an image on film or digital sensors. I'm sure that sounds silly or picayune or annoyingly politically correct to many... but you haven't met some of the hypersensitive principals and deans we did!

I learned not to say 'shoot' in May of 1979 when I joined Delmar Studios and Yearbooks as an AV producer. My boss corrected me — "I'm only going to say this one time..." That was enough, given the look on his face.

"We don't 'shoot pitchurs,' he said. "We don't TAKE pictures. We MAKE photographs or portraits."

That was a pivotal lesson... I believe it did subliminally affect my thinking, in a good way.

Especially after the Columbine HS shooting (04/20/1999), we cautioned our photographers to avoid saying 'shoot' within hearing distance of anyone on a campus! Emotions run raw after every such tragedy.
