Flowers Backed In Black

There was a question today about how to create a black background. I'm sure it depends on the software used but with Photoshop there are many ways to do it. I normally do it by painting in the black background using a levels layer black mask. No matter how you do it, if you have a lot of fine detail to work around it will take some time. I did all of these flowers this past week. The last shot's background is my living room carpet with a vignette added. Nikon D810, Sigma 105MM, f/2.8, on a tripod. Your thoughts/comments are always read and appreciated.

Thanks to all. One thing that hasn't changed are spring time flowers and they are in great abundance everywhere I go.

Really nice photos with limited facilities. I shoot a lot of flowers and plants in HDR. However I have a small studio I set up in a converted garage. So I simply put a black backdrop up and set the subject far enough forward to eliminate any light spilling onto the backdrop. I've seen it called "low light photography" and I usually only have a single light source, often a snoot projecting onto the subject.
With this set up there is no need to use Photoshop to mask out any background, that sounds like a lot of unnecessary work. I would rather put time into setting up the scene that work in post production - just my opinion.

Wonderful. I have little experience or talent at masking and will have to work on that. My personal preference is having the flowers appear grounded rather than floating. I have the Mask AI and haven't used it to any extent yet.

That’s a lot of work masking around the details .., when I want a black background , I use an art board sprayed with a black textured paint ..as it is so light and comes in large sizes ... doesn’t work on windy days .
Stick it behind the flora and instant black background ...

Very nice work!!
I find it easier to do the Black or darker background when taking the photo. Mostly using the aperture and flash. Next using a flat black background in the light tent.
