Boy did you get lucky. Only a few hundred dollars I bet.

(I dropped my Canon 5D Mark III; the repair required replacing the entire shutter assembly.)

It was about $355 (labor 219.00, parts just under 96.00), including tax and shipping, plus I paid just under $38.00 to ship it to the repair center. So, not quite $400--a plenty severe enough punishment for being careless, but not enough to make me hesitate about the repair. This was two years ago, when the camera was already six years old, too--I am waiting for the 5D Mark V (although I did buy a used 5DS R last year) instead of a 5D Mark IV. I hope Canon actually produces one and my only choice is not the EOS R5.

Bob - I hate camera straps and have never dropped a camera. I do put my camera in a sling case when hiking. - Dave

I dropped my camera from a 7 ft tripod. My Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM lens was damaged. My filter ring was bent, and, after the camera repair company received it, they called and said the lens had some internal damage. Their estimate was in my budget range- about $280.

They received my lens on Wednesday, shipped it to me on Friday. I expect to get it back on Tuesday. I only went a week without my lens. I was very happy with their service.

Here's their contact info.

Has any one had the experience of sadly dropping.....

I have seen many a grown photographer cry upon dropping their camera with lens attached. I am one of them. I was in London two years ago and in Barcelona last year. It is not a pretty sight. First and foremost hope and pray the camera body is undamaged. It is rare because most camera bodies are designed to take a decent amount of abuse. The lens is not as sturdy in part because of the focusing mechanism. Try to remove the lens. I had difficulty since the camera mount was bent. The front of the lens will sustain the most damage. The y to remove the lens cover or lens filter with a plier or oil filter wrench. You may not have a great deal of success. Take some test shots. If the are okay, you may be saved from an expensive repair job. However, you should contact the manufacturers and find out If they can repair any damage. Do not try to repair a camera or lens unless you are qualified. Most of us are not. Just be patient as this public health crisis will dissipate on time.

Be Well..... Stay Safe!
Happy Shooting!

Dropped my Fugi XT-2 on concrete. Shattered my nice little Nissin flash, but the camera and lens were perfectly OK. I guess the flash saved the camera and lens. Just good luck.

I don't know why virus issues would prevent you from sending or receiving mail.

Everybody is skiddish about a great deal of silliness now. Phone calls may provide a modicum of relief. Everybody is under the mistaken impression that a viral particle floating in the air will suddenly dive bomb onto unsuspecting people or cameras. That’s just nonsense.

Thankfully, dropping a camera is one thing I have never done. I have always had a neck strap and had that around my neck or across my shoulder. When walking I usually have the camera hanging over my right shoulder with the camera on my right hip. I have also never had anyone try to grab the camera and run, even in Germany. If you cannot find a camera repair facility open you must live in a blue state. Then you have a problem.

Really? Is Germany known as a place where cameras are regularly grabbed from the owner's neck? . . .

Never leave home without a neck strap, and use it all the time. I have gone by that rule forever.

I never bought a 5D mk III; instead I bought a 6D. Slightly less camera but for my needs it got the job done quite nicely. When the 5DSr was introduced I told myself I really have no need for one but eventually bought one right before Christmas that year. It's a great high resolution camera but I quickly learned it's not your every day shooter. I eventually bought a 5D mk IV and it is my go to full frame for daily use. If Canon does introduce a 5D mk V or 5DX, I will probably not get one in favor of an R5.

Thanks

I would try the canning jar trick. If you don't have one they are cheaper than an hour labor cost. You will find other uses for them as well.
I fell in a rock pile several years ago while trying to find the spot that would provide the picture I wanted. My Pentax went flying into the rocks. I picked it up and tried it. The Tamron lens wasn't damaged, nor was the camera. The camera had several bad scratches on the body but everything worked. I'm still using both the camera and the lens with no issues.
Good Luck Sir.

I wouldn't say "everybody" because that's all inclusive. I for one, and probably many, many others, am not under any mistaken impression that some viral particle is out there floating in the air waiting to dive bomb me.
The county I live in, in southeast PA, has a population of over 50,000 of which there has been just over 2100 reported cases of the virus and 220 deaths, the majority of those cases were residents of nursing homes. I recommend avoiding nursing homes.
Anyway, I took my dogs for a walk in a popular local park the other day and there were plenty of people out enjoying the warm spring day. I passed dozens of people on the walking path and no one that I noticed was wearing a respirator mask. I'm guessing they weren't skittish, (I believe the word you meant to use is skittish), of a viral dive bomber, although there was good reason to be concerned about a few well fed Robins.
