I just bought a Nikon Refurb D5600 and am shooting to check it out. My focus point is wandering all over the screen (or view finder) while I hold down the BBF button on the back. I went through Steve Perry's book twice to review my set up and can't find what I might have set incorrectly. I've tried 11 point and 39 point focus but no change in behavior. I've got something wrong or the D5600 has to go back to Nikon. I appreciate your help and direction. PS I have a D5300 without any such behavior.

Try single point center focus.

I want to, but haven't found the right menu path to get there. That's what I prefer on all my digital bodies.
Thank you,

You have it set for 3d tracking focus.

The chapter on Focus begins on page 82 of the D5600 Reference Manual.

Sounds like the same problem I had just a few weeks ago with my D850. Turned out I had accidently switched to 3D focus. With help from fellow UHH'rs I got back to Group Focus and all is good.

On the back of the camera, right side, press the "i" button; bottom row third "button" from the left is the AF-area mode; select single point AF; press the "i" again. Voila!

I have heard so many times that when everything else fails it is time to read the instructions.

Try placing the focus select switch in LOCK.

That right there! ^

~On my D5200, I have to hit the info button twice to be able to change settings. I bought this body used with no manual, but all settings can be found online very easily - YouTube is very informative for this series of camera.

Thank you to all of you who replied and provided directions. Problem solved. PS since the camera is a Nikon refurb it arrived without a manual.
I appreciate you guys and gals.

The Nikon site has the manual freely available for download as a PDF. Even people who don't own Nikons do that.

CHG, I've been searching the site for the last 5-10 minutes trying to find the location for downloads. Finally submitted my question to Nikon support. Just need a Nikon site link. Their search options are not as helpful as I would expect.

"google nikon d5600 manual" yields:

https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/en/products/351/D5600.html

From the Nikon page, pick the appropriate language. Save locally and rename the file to something that helps identify the document in the future like "D5600_User_Manual_English.pdf".

Ideally, create a "Nikon Manuals" folder on your computer. Whenever you fetch one of these manuals for a question, add that PDF into your library for faster access.
