I've been photographing the repair of our basement for the last week. I would like to put it all together in some kind of automated slide show. I might give it an audio narration, or I might just use text to describe the various steps. Should I adapt some video editing program to do it, or is there something simpler dedicated to still photographs? Any recommendations? Thanks.

If you have Powerpoint, you can easily do it there, also in Windows Live Photo Gallery, and countless others.

The standard version would most likely do all you need.

5 min video showing a few features.

Depends purpose - if for you or to show others on your computer PwrPt a good suggestion. Or maybe if wish to show others over email make the PwrPt automatically viewable without the program or convert to video for upload to something like YouTube, then can send out link.

I use powerpoint and convert to video also. I sometimes use NCH PhotoStage Slideshow which is free for non-commercial use but you have to have it to play it if you use it to create.

I like Movavi Video Editor. It's easy to use, very versatile, and inexpensive.

I use Corel's VideoStudio for my "slide shows" and I'm very happy with the results. As with any software there is a learning curve, but to my mind it is well worth the effort. The results can be very professional looking videos, allowing multiple sound tracks, overlays and zooming and you can mix stills and videos.

I use Pro Show Gold to do this but it is discontinued and replaced by its creator with a subscription version that’s just as good. Find it at autodex.com.

I'm a HUGE fan of using video editing software for slide shows. I've used iMovie on a Mac for the last 20 years. It does a great job with slide shows, because you can import just about ANY image file into the timeline and title it, transition it, crop it, zoom it, pan it... plus you can add titles, video, audio, and make minor color and brightness adjustments. You can synchronize the sound with the "slide" changes, too.

Premiere Elements on the Windows platform is a similar choice. A Mac version is available, but iMovie and Final Cut Pro X are integrated with Mac hardware, so faster and smoother.

For more power and advanced features, try Final Cut Pro X (Mac only) or Premiere Pro (Windows and Mac, but again, there are better choices on the Mac).

Inevitably, some folks here will recommend the outdated, unsupported, defunct Windows only program ProShow, ProShow Gold, or ProShow Web. Unfortunately, Photodex, the maker of those programs, is out of business.

Mac or Windows, I recommend the public domain "donation ware" program, VLC Media Player, for playback. https://www.videolan.org

And if you need to resize a video to make it smaller, the equally "free" (donation ware) program, HandBrake, is an excellent cross-platform tool. https://handbrake.fr

Pictureflex Photo Viewer for Windows from the Microsoft App store. Free. Works absolutely awesome. After a very short learning curve which basically involves learning to use a few menu buttons it does practically everything. With free plug in it supports RAW. People in reviews complain that is does not do a good job of editing but I do all my editing in LR so I have not had that experience. I run it on a dedicated desktop machine that is hidden in a cupboard. It is then hooked to a 42 inch flat screen on the wall. Runs non-stop slide shows as a dedicated unit. Years of experimentation with many picture viewer frames and computer monitor set ups with many, many slide show viewing programs have brought me to this version. Very happy. I do not use the PRO version which supports video, that is an extra $1.99 to add. Can get a free 48 hour trial version of Pro if you want to try video.

If it was me I would use PowerPoint. It will do anything you may want and also will let you save the presentation as an exe file that will run without PowerPoint being installed on the pc.
Also like the timing and repeat capabilities.
