You clearly know nothing about Oregon. We have 36 counties. 27 always vote Republican. Four more swing back and forth, but largely Republican. That leaves 5 that vote Democratic and they always win. They have a super majority in the house and senate and keep passing taxes that have a disproportionate impact on the rural counties.

Four cities control the entire state and it doesn't matter if I vote or not except for local elections because nothing I do matters. Our county voted 78 percent Republican in the last governor's election and the Democrat still won by a 52 to 48 percent majority state wide.

That's why northern California, a small piece of Idaho and Nevada and Eastern Oregon have all proposed creating a new state called Jefferson out of pieces of the four states. Of course it will never happen, but it would at least mean that we were fairly represented at the state level.

The state has 4.73 million people, 1 million Democrats and approximately 800,000 Republicans. But you would never know that from statewide elections. Oregon has been blue in national elections since Clinton's first term as president. Almost half of the registered Democrats are in the city of Portland. Most of the rest are in Eugene-Springfield and Salem. Virtually the entire rest of the state is Red. And the politicians know it and regularly dump on us.

Example just passed a gas tax increase with almost half of the money going to fund metro mass transit. Rural Oregon by necessity drives more miles then metropolitan Oregon, so we pay a higher percentage of the tax, but get none of the benefits. Happens in everything and has been getting worse. This past legislative session they passed 23 either tax increases or fee hikes and almost all of them disproportionally harm rural residents, which is fine with the politicians since their city dwelling constituents reap the benefits of the extra taxes that we pay.

Indiana is a ruby red state, but I am an Independent. The state almost always casts its electoral votes for the Republican, but I vote for the best candidate. It doesn’t do any good to complain about politicians, so I don’t. Both allow me to photograph our beautiful land - and yours is really lovely.

You have well said the problem of political economy in your state. I believe fair representation schemes exist to address and resolve this distortion you describe.

Right now, you and others there suffer from majority-rule politics negatively affecting the rights of the minority party. You live under a version of taxation without due representation.

The U.S. early on fixed this imbalance by giving each state one representative in the Senate which body has to vote on a measure to levy and collect a tax. Compromise ensues.

Well, enough. Surely others there have put their minds to this problem.

I agree with what you are saying. That is why there is a proposed new state. That's the best anyone has come up with yet.

Yes it is a beautiful place. I live in the high desert portion of the state, so very different from what most people expect. Here is the river that runs through town. The photo is a three photo panorama. And for anyone who is looking, yes, I know the horizon isn't quite straight.

Take Eastern Washington with you. We have the same problem with King County.

You answer, not on purpose exactly why we need the Electoral College.

I absolutely agree about the electoral college. Unfortunately Oregon is one of the states that is trying to do an end run around the Constitution by agreeing with multiple other states that as soon as enough states agree that they can have a majority of electoral votes they will give all of their electoral college votes to the candidate with the most popular votes regardless of how their state voted. They don't have enough states yet, but unless the supreme court weighs in and says their attempt is unconstitutional it will eventually happen. Best guess is they will have enough states by the 2024 election.

I really hope I'm wrong.

Sadly, you are not wrong. The pervasive, insidious and deliberate mis-education of the American people from Kindergarten to PhD-level by socialist-leaning educators and the mainstream media since the late 1960s has reached the tipping point after which there can be no recovery short of an unlikely violent civil war. As more and more young Americans succumb to the continuing push by socialists to denigrate and destroy Christianity in this country, promote moral relativism and atheism, and vilify entrepreneurial endeavors, America will lose its soul. The America which the Founders prepared for us will probably not survive beyond 250 years past its founding. Government "of, by and for the people" will become simply government suppression of the people--just as in China.

Recent revelations of the audacity of the FBI and NIA/CIA leaders to break the law in order to destroy a presidency and protect one political party's criminal activities shows just how close to the tipping point we are. Now the Left's politicians, using the pandemic crisis as leverage, are doing their best to crush America's economy, and its leadership in the world, fully endorsed by the mainstream media's unrestrained support of China's version of events.

Without the Electoral College, a few highly populated states can control the destiny of the nation. Should 160,000,001 citizens be able to crush the aspirations of the other 159,999,999? Okay, so not all 320 million people vote. [I don't know the precise number of eligible voters there are.] Nonetheless when only one person's vote can cast half the population into political exile you don't have democracy, you have tyranny by the "majority". Without the Electoral College, once fifty-one per cent of the voters are socialists, the Constitution will be quickly, officially, gutted, and much of our freedom lost.

I believe this transformation will occur in the next ten years.

You misunderstood what I was writing. Sorry it wasn't more clear. I believe that without the supreme court intervening the electoral college will be effectively gone by 2024, that's less than 10 years.

I hope I'm wrong, but progressive states are banding together to try to kill the electoral college and I fear they are going to be successful.

I 100 percent agree with what you are saying.

btbg thinks "You misunderstood what I was writing."

No. You were clear. But remember, when the Democrats get the power, they have promised to enlarge the Supreme Court and flood it with liberal activist judges. Once so changed, the Electoral College and the Constitution will soon be stripped of authority.
