Here is an interesting graphic about the frequency of use of the terms for this virus: https://www.axios.com/coronavirus-china-wuhan-republicans-e9c2cd35-c5bb-42df-9e30-94364548d1fb.html Some things to gather: The terms China virus and Wuhan virus were actually the most common initial names used in the media (I did not know that). And it is logical to call it those things, given the origin and some precedent. But then those really pushing (I would say flogging) for adaptation of the terms 'China virus' or 'Wuhan virus' were coming from conservative sources, and the World Health Org. began to push for calling it Covid-19, which is also logical, btw, and they did so citing that those other terms were increasing prejudice and suspicion against Asians, Chinese or otherwise. The WHO was right about that. I hope those who want to use the term China virus understand that its' really frightening to long term Chinese families and other Asian families here in the U.S. You would not want to be under that feeling of resentment.
Just a summary of the history of this. Both sides seem to have a point though in my gut it does feel that folks who use the terms favored by conservatives do so for an agenda. Of course we liberals have an agenda too.
Anyway, like it or not, 'China virus' is not winning the language wars, as that term looks like it will fade from use. Language takes directions that are hard to dictate.

Its really easy to move to the corners of civility when we are dealing with not just unexpected death, but a death that is agonizing, slow, very painful, alone, with great suffering with the panic of not being able to breath, and all the while asking yourself where did you get it? The numbers will never be accurate. We count flu deaths by estimate given the number of confirmed cases and "other" suspicious deaths. In terms of the Covid 19, its actual deaths confirmed by testing. We already know that in NYC, there are about 400 bodies discovered daily before Covid; during the peak, it was 1500. So far, this disease is about 10x that of the flu, of known cases!! We all should be mindful of the huge risk of this unseen, very contagious killer, and not just old folks either. Children, and healthy adults are falling victim as well. Uncertainty breeds fear, and fear pushes us to hatred, racism and violence often follows. We all need to keep our eye on the ball: keep us all spiritually and physically safe.

It is not the "China" virus. It may have originated there, but it is racist to call it the China virus. There is a proper name; novel coronavirus, which causes a disease called COVID-19. The "19" means it was discovered in 2019, not that it is the 19th coronavirus. Plus the fact that corona viruses have been around forever. This happens to be a new one for which there no vaccine or cure. The "novel" part of the name means it was transmitted from animal to humans.

Take your fake virtue signaling and stuff it!

It is not racism, it’s a geographic reference.....It started in China.

But, let’s add, the Chinese lied about it, the Chinese doctored data....its the Chinese virus and that is not racist, it’s a fact.

Do you have any idea how many viruses, illnesses, etc, are named after GEOGRAPHIC locations? I thought not, Einstein.

I'm with you! "Spanish flu" originated in Kansas at an army base.......now that we're Number One in cases and deaths shouldn't we "own" this new virus? Makes us "great" again.

There is viable & compelling evidence The Spanish flu also started in China, was brought back here, and our soldiers then spread it.

It is NOT racist to refer to a virus by name of the region, country, continent, etc. which was the point of origin. It's simply a geographic identification. It would probably be racist to call it the Chink Virus, for example. I'd suggest you educate yourself on the difference between a geographic location and a population of people living there.

In that case we should refer to the hats worn by Trump supporters as Red Chinese hats. Funny how that works.

I just ordered my newest t-shirt. It has a drawing of a flying bat against a yellow background and says "Wuhan Wild Wings." Under the drawing it says "So good it's contagious." Yeh, right. Your purpose is to offend. You’re exercising your Constitutional right to be offensive.

Sometimes we say something and then find out that there are people that are offended by it. Now we may not have intended to offend, we may not understand why they would be offended, but since they are offended we use another term that is acceptable. That isn’t to be liberal, that’s to be civilized. Unless your vocabulary is so limited that you can’t think of any other term and in that case you are simply to be pitied.

I remember a simpler time - about two months ago - when we could list every victim and do that in a few minutes - a time when a member here stated he would be surprised if the total reached 300 by April 1; but even then, that total was doubling every few days. These deaths are counted the ways flu deaths are; these are deaths in which the person would still be alive, albeit weakened, if the virus had not tipped the scale. It seems like a big number, but this is a vicious virus. Here in town seven elderly people are counted, including three ‘nuns’ in a convent that might as well be a nursing home because all of them are retired. After hearing the personal accounts of survivors, I believe this virus is capable of such things because it is highly contagious as well as vicious; for example, several people associated with the White House were sickened in a single day.

So, I believe the total built up this way is reasonable right now. I have a medical appointment this week, and I am required to wear a mask, the second time in a month a medical provider has included this requirement, so I believe they also believe this virus is capable of such things.

They have been using presumptive counting instead of “tested“ counting in many states, such as Illinois, and the latest model has switched to presumptive (thus the jump in expected deaths).

The geographic origin of the “Spanish” flu is not known for sure. Read the available information on the Spanish flu if you’re interested in knowing the full story of that pandemic.

Enough with the “racist” crap. It originated in China, hence, it can be called the China virus. Nothing racist about it. Go to your “safe place” if it bothers you that much.

IF ones were to say they love to eat Chinese food; does that make them a food racist?
