Hello, I am new here. I'm no photographer at all. At least, not one that I would artistically a photographer. I recently acquired a camera and lens from my mom as a "hand me down" as she got newer stuff. All she told me was to take care of it, not lose it, don't sell it, and use it. She used to use it as hobby which she took very seriously. I asked her advice on how to start out but she told me "figure out the questions [I] would like to ask."
Right now, I'm still figuring out the functions of my camera and still waiting for my memory cards to come in. I know that the camera holds 2 SDXC cards. I hope 2 x 128GB is enough.
Anyway, I'm going to do just that and it's nice too meet you all.
Welcome the the UHH. I you know little of nothing about digital photography, may I suggest you pick up and read the first book in a series by Pro photographer and author Scott Kelby. The book and the series is called The Digital Photography Book; the book is volume 1. These books are easy and a pleasure to read and will teach you at your own pace just about everything you will need to know to be a decent digital photographer. As for your camera, if it didn't come with a manual you will probably find one on-line, plus there are lots of camera specific books available on-line. They are good to have if you are newbie.
Yeah, I have a manual. A lot of the terms are understandable at a very elementary physics perspective. The manual helps a ton so far when it comes to navigating the menu and programming buttons.
As for the book, I'll look into it. I hope it is something that can help clarify all the jargon I'm seeing.
Thanks!
Welcome to UHH. Read your manual and learn all of the functions of your camera. As you get to know your camera's functions and what the different settings do, go out and shoot with it and learn how changing those settings affect the images images you take. Post images and ask questions here when you aren't sure about something, there are plenty of members that can and will help when you need it... all you have to do is ask.
Good Luck to you in your new hobby.
Welcome. Practice is free with digital photography. So take lots of images and have a good time.

Welcome and good luck to you. There is so much t do & learn here. You will enjoy it I hope.
Welcome. You WILL learn. Ask questions here.
Welcome to the forum. A beginner book on digital photography is a great idea. There are many. Good luck.

Welcome to the Hog, enjoy.
Welcome. You didn't say what camera you have. Note: that some older cameras cannot read/write to large GB cards and to certain types of cards. You should purchase cards that your owners manual recommends. As a long time college instructor of photography I recommend seeking out local community college classes or even classes offered by your local schools, parks a recreation and camera stores. There is nothing easier to learn that the one on one attention you get in a class. Then shoot shoot shoot. BTW you don't need to spend big bucks on a program for your computer. There is one built right in. If your are an Apple user then the "Photos" program is exactly the same as on your iPhone only more powerful. Windows users will also fing the Photos program on their computer. It is not as powerful as the Apple one but it will do most of you post processing. Both are very easy to use. Keep shooting and have fun

Welcome to the Hog. I will second the suggeestion about Scott Kelby's book(s). There are five in the series to date. I have the first three and waiting for numbers 4 and 5. An additional suggestion, search youtube for video tutorials on basic photography and for your make and model of camera. There are many excellent videos available. Also online courses are available from a wide variety of instructors, many are free and others are very reasonably priced. Of course there are also those which are higher in price. Along the way, take photos, ask questions here, practice and post photos here when you feel ready or have a question about a photo. Good luck and practice.
