merrytexan,

Beautiful picture!

But it might be a female Summer Tanager vice a cardinal. Check this out.

thank you very much art...glad you like it. it could possibly be a female summer tanager, but the
young bird was with the male cardinal...at least I thought it was...lol. last year I did see what I believe
was a male tanager (he was red) in one of our big wax myrtle trees. I only saw him that one time though. I appreciate your comment and suggestion.

merrytexan,

Do not despair!

While still common, the summer tanager is a lot harder to spot than the northern cardinal. And to get a credible photo of one (like your shot) is special indeed.

Also, the female of most bird species can be really challenging to accurately identify.

You should feel very proud about this photo. In my mind, bird ID is secondary to getting the shot, so well done!

I believe it is exactly that....maybe the bird with her was the male tanager and not a male cardinal.
thank you for commenting...glad you enjoyed the bird and appreciate your id.

there's a cute cardinal in the pear tree!

this little cardinal...female I think...was eyeing the suet feeder but never did land on it.
the daddy was hiding farther back in the tree offering encouragement . I guess he was home schooling the
children while mama cardinal was building another nest.

MT, an awesome catch which only a photographer could capture, not the camera being used.
