A couple of examples of camera / lens / tripod shots.

You can have a lot of fun with a simple set up. Just up the ISO and shoot lots of subs for alignment and stacking (to reduce random noise).

Try to adhere to the 500 Rule; however, postprocessing can significantly reduce star trailing.

Stay away from Auto White Balance (AWB), preferable to use Daylight setting. AWB can change by image; hard to correct for in post.

I had the same issue...living in Dallas. I did some research on light pollution in our area and found some areas west of Fort Worth. I did a night shoot at the State Historic site of Fort Griffen. I was able to get some really nice shots. Milky way was faint but did show in the photo. A little light painting yielded some keepers.
