My God what you guys have to go through to feed the birds.
In New Zealand the ONLY thing you have to worry about, at least in suburbia, is domestic cats. Place the feeder on a hooked pole and even the cats can't touch it. As was noticed above birds are messy eaters so the seed that falls to the ground does attract the birds there too in which case they have to keep an eye out for cats.
Maybe in the country you might have to be careful of oppossums.
We don't have snakes, bears, large birds, raccoons, squirrels. Do have mice and hedgehogs and haven't seen a rat for a long time. The long wire hook takes care of the mice.
All feeders attract unwanted guests. Had a large herd bull that sought out deer feeders. He'd get under them and flip them over causing hundreds of pounds of corn to be where he could consume it.
It's fun to watch how Squirrel 's figure how to beat a bird feeder we had a plastic funnel on the pole and the Squirrel 's ate a slot through it then I went to a metal one and the Squirrel 's leaped from a kids house roof to the feeder we moved the play house a little way each day to see how far the Squirrel would jump he won out what happened was he reached a point he couldn't jump that far and found a different place to jump from our back fence, very determined Howie

Yes, one of the reasons we added a squirrel feeder is that these fellow mammals are clever as well as athletic - and truthfully I enjoy watching them. I will miss them in the seven months or so until feeding season resumes again.

Yes, different in just about every country.
Would love to visit NZ. Have a friend on the bigger island out there that sends us pictures now and then.
For me, it's a joy to interact with wild animals. I have 15 or so deer that come to my home every day and sometimes 5 or 6 will lay in the yard waiting for me to come out of the house to feed them.

The squirrels will chew your house.
Lived in Germantown, TN for 6 years. The neighbor's house had holes in the corner of the roof (front and back) where squirrels would enter and make nests.
I have to constantly shoo them away from my home now because they chew on the corners of my garage which was newly sided.
Beyond that, I agree they are fun to watch.
I stopped using my bird feeder when I realized I was also feeding the local rats. One of the little buggers burrowed through the foundation and into my basement. My dog caught it when it tried to eat from the dog's food bowl.
Funny!
Would love to hear from someone who has actually purchased one. How well did it hold up and does it really work? My bet, 1st or 2nd rain did it in.

Do a search on YouTube. There are some great videos of this!
Use slinkys around a steel pole. It drives the squirrels crazy
