Also, google the Escape radio show "Earth Abides". It is two half hour episodes adapting the book of the same name to radio. Chilling to some degree, describing a world wide pandemic that wipes out civilization and how the few survivors cope with it, The radio adaptation has been sanitized quite a bit from the book but the point is similar.

Probably “The Stranger.” It was a popular book to teach.
I read La Peste (The Plague) at school. Camus and existentialism were very much the vogue then, back in the 1960s. Of course, I can't remember much about it now, but I also had to read (to contrast and compare) Journal of the Plague Year by Daniel Defoe, some bits of which did stick in my memory.
Earth Abides, by George R. Stewart, is definitely up there among the best SF novels of all time, if not the best novels of any genre. It has been continuously in print since its publication in 1949. Heartily recommended.

It was a novel, but it was about a real event in the nineteen forties.

A Journal of the Plague Year by Daniel Defoe. About the plague of 1664 in England. An early example of journalism.

I have never heard such high praise for Earth Abides. I've never read it because it was said to be very depressing. Based on you comment I think I will give it a try. Thanks for the tip.
Camus' The Plague is my favorite book ever. lots of great messages. lots of similarities to today's plague.
