If I were photographing that scene, I'd have walked a bit forward to remove the dried grass from the view. Then, pretty much photographed the scene as in the first image. The cloudy sky is just too inviting to not include it. The foreground can be sacrificed, as it doesn't add much to the overall image.

Looking for some input from my fellow Hoggers. These are the same image, processed identically, and the only difference is the cropping. (Well, I did move the truck a bit to accommodate the crop, but...) I personally like certain aspects of both, but would like to hear from some other perspectives. View in Download, as usual! Thanks!

I like the first one but would crop about an inch off the top, just above where the whiteness is peaking through, so you leave some white portion coming through.
Now you have the grass foreground giving it depth, and a great scene overall.

I like both, but if I had to pick one I'd go with number one because of the feeling of vastness and the sunbeam shadows. To me the sun and shadows add a lot. The grass gives it depth.

(If the intent is the barn, then number two.)

The question to ask yourself is, "Am I interested in the barn, or the landscape beyond the barn?"

You prett much nailed the rule of thirds. Personally I would tweak the grass in the fore ground. Both are acceptable. Trust your instincts.

I like the setting and mood in #1. The clouds provide a perfect counterbalance to the grass.

What he said! #1 for me; I love the whole image. The sky and clouds, the foreground grass, and the light and colors are perfect!

I would suggest a crop slightly different than either #1 or #2. The second image looks 'too tight" on the right side. I personally would crop #1 in a bit on the right side, and top, leaving the one fir tree in the image.

I like the composition of photo 1 over photo 2. Also, when you blow up the downloads, image 1 remains clearer than image 2.

FWIW, I vote for #2.

Sometimes landscapes look better as portrait at least to me.

I really like the crop you used - and the portrait orientation does add a different dimension to the image - thanks!!

The second image would have been better if it were shot at a different, lower angle and closer in...

Perhaps, but this is only 1 image with different crops - that was the exercise. If I wanted to shoot only the barn, I think you are right and I would have gone down the hill and shot it at a lower angle. Thanks for commenting!

I definitely prefer the first one. The first one is a scene, it has depth and the light source and rays explain the nice shadows. Very nice shot.

The second one is just a barn, no need to look or think any further. It doesn't hold any interest unless you are really into barns.

I see your point, and I tend to agree with you on the difference in the construct and impact due to the crop. Thanks!

Tried a couple diff things - but on both reduced the foreground to just a hint of the grass and kept a lot of sky. #1 put more emphasis on the barn. #2 put more emphasis on the truck.
Of these two I like #1 best.
But it's your picture so you find the one you'll put your name on.
(I didn't say I liked my crops better than yours, just gave you a little different perspective?)

Nice work! I also tried one with the foreground reduced to just a hint of the grass, then couldn't decide if the grass added anything or was just a distraction. I see in your image that it worked the way you cropped it. I really like the first one, but #2 seems unbalanced to me for some reason. In any event, thanks so much for taking the time to work on the image and post your thoughts!

Thanks so very much to everyone who posted a comment. The consensus seems to be, "#1 if you want the landscape impact, #2 if you want the barn." That's kind of the way I structured the crops so I guess the ideas came through. I so appreciate your thoughts and suggestions, a few of which I will endeavor to incorporate in future images. Salud!
