I think this falls into the category of “you get what you pay for”. My experience has been with non-OEM batteries for a Sony that never, ever would hold a charge like OEM battery would & in my experience tended to be too fragile if dropped even once(I can be clumsy at times) with resultant available usage measured in minutes.
I’ve always found OEM batteries for my Canons 40d & 6d-2 to be extremely durable

I have a Canon 80D which is about 3 years old and has the original Canon battery which came with it. I fear the battery is failing because after charging for over 24 hrs, the camera reports a 60% charge and after taking 80 photos I have only 2 bars left.

Here is my question. I was ready to pay the $63 B&H wants for an QEM battery. Several people have recommended I try a Wasabi battery. A single battery is $10.99 vs $63. Now I know when things sound too good to be true, they usually are. There has to be a reason the OEM is so much more money.

Anyone have any experience with Wasabi batteries who can shed some light on this?

Thanks to all who respond

I generally use OEM, but I also have third party, including Wasabi. Never had an issue since going digital in early ‘90s.

Sorry to hear you had a bad battery or batteries. What specific brand of aftermarket battery were you using? I have had Canon batteries swell (for a T2i) but not ready to trash the entire Canon company for a bad experience.

I rely on approximately 6 aftermarket batteries and 2 OEM Canons. The aftermarket ones have a higher mAh rating and last at least 50% longer in use. I currently use a Vivitar branded set which I found years ago and was able to verify were made by the same company that painted Canon on OEM batteries sold by Canon. (No camera manufacturer makes their own batteries). I am glad I didn't pay more for the expensive paint since the battery is in all ways identical to Canon branded batteries and manufactured on the same line.

I have never heard of a battery swelling in a single use to make it un-removeable (not saying it can't happen just that the folks I have talked to said they noticed a potential problem but put it in anyway). In fact in my case, charging caused the issue and I never will put a swollen battery in a camera even if it will go in.

Overcharging due to charger failure is the most common cause. Other things can cause the swelling but I personally have not heard of anyone having a 'normal' battery come out swelled after a single use.

Your results may vary ...

I would only add this:

I shoot on a professional basis and I use "Photoolex Batteries". (I am sure the Wasabi's are just as good)

I do use the Meke Battey grip, (excellent) and I have my Nikon D750 set to "USE THE BATTERY GRIP BAT. FIRST"!

I put the Original Nikon Battery "IN THE CAMERA ONLY" and use the 3rd party battery in the "GRIP ONLY"! Thus I will be covered under the Nikon warranty for the camera.

I find that the Photoolex batteries "LAST LONGER, and CHARGE FASTER" than the original Nikon battery.

I have used these batteries for about a year and love them so far!

BTW: I have heard nothing but good things about the Wasabi batteries as well.

Thanks,
Boone.

Your Wasabi batteries swelled ? Also, why didn't you buy the Wasabi's that DID match or exceed the mAh rating ? Not challenging you on it - just curious. Have you talked to Wasabi and replaced them or got money back ?

Yep like I said over and over both batteries swelled! They only offer one battery. Google aftermarket camera batteries ratings. Wasabi tested only 900 mAh when they took it apart...cheap cells which you’d expect for the price. No man to much trouble for so little $$ for a refund. I loved them until I couldn’t get them out of my camera! Maybe Sony has higher tolerances for battery dimensions. They were a little snug when first installed. Give Em a try.

Must be Sony’s battery dimensions but I still blame the batteries for swelling and making them unusable in my RX10M4! So Glad I got it loose!

I had two wasabi's plus my oem for my Canon. They work but last hale as long.

I have a Canon eos rp which I like except the battery is small and very limited. I keep a small charger handy which I connect to the camera with a cable. It is inconvenient but effective. I have always used canon, but their poor battery design has soured my feelings.

After doing research for over a week on all the popular 3rd party batteries, reading both customer and blog reviews I have come to a decision. While many people have praised 3rd party batteries there are too many horror stories of 3rd party batteries dying, swelling and destroying camera electronics for my comfort zone. I will me buying an QEM Canon battery from B&H and paying the $63. Risking a $1000 camera to save $30 does not make good sense.

I have 2 Wasabi batteries but have found that the Rav batteries are better as they are larger in lasting power. More amps per battery. Here is the quote from Amazon "Updated RAVPower LP-E6 LP E6N Rechargeable Battery Charger Set,2-Pack 2040mAh Camera Batteries Compatible with Canon EOS 5D Mark II, III, IV, 5DS, 5DS R, 6D, 60D,6D Mark II, 7D, 7D Mark II,70D, 80D" -2 batteries/ plus charger for $33 bucks. In my mind, the Rav has lasted longer in years also- I had a 7D from way back, so I have had batteries for many years. I do night shots plus time-lapse so I have a few batteries- The Rav are better to me!

I have an older 60D Canon and I have been using a couple of Wasabi replacement batteries for several years. I don't get out much and they usually have over half a charge even after sitting in my camera bag for several months. Mine are just as good as OEM.

I have scratched RavPower off my list. I had contacted RavPower customer service about buy a battery. They told me they WILL NOT sell me just one battery. I MUST buy 2 batteries and a charger. Was told I MUST only use the RavPower charger as the Canon OEM charger will damage the battery thus voiding the warranty. Wasabi will sell me a package deal or I can buy individually and Wasabi told also me their battery WILL charge in the Canon OEM charger. Watson also told me the same thing.

All of my Nikon OEM batteries charge in my Nikon supplied chargers. I suspect Canon, and others, are the same. Nothing to wonder about here. Best of luck.

I happen to like the Kastar batteries. Seem to be just as good as the original in my 6D and 77D.

I too have had excellent results with Kastar batteries for the past 3-4 years, only mine were Sony replacements.

I like Kastar batteries, and chargers.
Cheap, reliable, effective.
The ONLY bad battery I've had this century was a gennie Nikon, that came with the camera.
BUT with 5 different Nikon batteries floating around, I'm about to label everything with $1 nail polish
