Looking for some input from my fellow Hoggers. These are the same image, processed identically, and the only difference is the cropping. (Well, I did move the truck a bit to accommodate the crop, but...) I personally like certain aspects of both, but would like to hear from some other perspectives. View in Download, as usual! Thanks!

I definitely prefer the first one. The first one is a scene, it has depth and the light source and rays explain the nice shadows. Very nice shot.

The second one is just a barn, no need to look or think any further. It doesn't hold any interest unless you are really into barns.

The second image would have been better if it were shot at a different, lower angle and closer in...

I like both, but if I had to pick one I'd go with number one because of the feeling of vastness and the sunbeam shadows. To me the sun and shadows add a lot. The grass gives it depth.

This is my thought, also. I think the scene should be of the whole area, not focused on the barn.

I took the liberty, if you don't mind, of playing with the crop... and then some dodging & burning and ended up with this.

Though looking at my export... I'd cut down the saturation a little bit more.

Barry.

Barry, your adjustment just doesn't look quite natural to me, reduced saturation would be my preference.

Glad you went back and did 2 variations of #1. My vote was #1 with a crop that includes some of that beautiful foreground grass to give the picture depth. Glad you went back and saw other options, too. The second picture is more like a real estate 'farm for sale' record shot. It lacks the life, the depth and and the invitation to explore the image.

(If the intent is the barn, then number two.)

Absolutely right. I’m completely against over saturation. And what I posted was just that. Always good to look at your work later. Barry

To me, the 2nd one is cropped too tight. It loses the depth of the first one. Try going about half way between the two, and see what you get.

no 1 for me , because it tells more of the story of farm land

Sometimes landscapes look better as portrait at least to me.

I agree. The sunbeam shadows drew my eyes as well as the cloud formation.
However if the subject of the picture was the barn, then #2.

It depends. If you want a photo of the scene, the first one fits; if you want a photo of the barn, then it’s the second one. I like them both for each reason. Personally, I’d choose the first one because it’s more like the shots I like to take whenever space permits. Including surroundings gives a more complete story,
I think.

I think they are both good. Which one is preferred depends on what you want to feature... is it the pastoral scene? Or, the barn and immediate surroundings? Same photo, different crop for different areas of interest.
