I need one too so when looking around for parts I'm wondering what the wing nut in the last photo is a part of - some sort of ring clamp? Very good option of being able to set the camera height with the dowel resting on the floor.

Very clever idea. If you used an untapered dowel, you would have infinite height adjustment.

After 8 back surgeries including full fusion of all levels, I am no longer able to get down low to take pictures. I searched for a solution but found nothing appropriate. Then I built something very simple. It uses a pole about the size of a hiking pole and a hardwood platform. The tripod head is attached to the platform with a 1/4 x 20 screw. The platform can slide up and down the rod to the desired level. Now I can shoot low angle shots while standing upright. The entire rig cost next to nothing but solved a big problem for me. Hope others find this useful.

It is a wonderful example of Yankee ingenuity. I like my TILT screen which basically does the same thing, thank you Nikon and Sony.

I have been racking my brain to devise just such a device - thank you!
I see you are using a wing nut to tighten the clamping - just how does the clamping work? Do you think it will hold Nikon's D850?

I love your simple but useful DIY.

Could you post a picture with your camera mounted?

How do you focus and frame your shot?

Nice idea where there is a will there is a way. Oh you forgot some gear for it...like a rack-n-pinon the lower gear attached to the platform and a larger gear with a handle attached at the top now you don't have to move just crank on the handle and elevate to the desired position, no muss or fuss.....

Nice invention. I hang my cameras. My tripod is reversible.

That will work as lomg as you have a fully articulated lcd screen. Unfortunately mine does not.

I was thinking the same thing and then two thoughts came up;
1) Is it tapered or was the shot taken with a wide angle lens at a weird angle. (I still think it is tapered)
2) What if it tapered the other way? With the fatter part at the bottom, there would be no in-shot slippage.

Nice! I'm likely to build a rig similar to that. It will have a gimbal-like swivel on top, and a weight on the bottom, so it becomes a poor man's Steadycam for video recording. I have a video head for my tripod which would work perfectly for this.

I have a Lumix GH4, which has a fully articulating OLED touch screen. It would work perfectly on a rig such as that. I love its ease of use on a copy stand and slide duplicating rig. I don't have to lean over it or ever look through a viewfinder if I don't want to.

I use the Panasonic Image App on my iPhone to trip the shutter on my GH4. It's a wireless remote setup I can use to control practically everything on the camera. When the GH4 is set to electronic shutter mode, there is NO vibration or shutter shock.

Great for shooting small wildflowers emerging right now. Show us some shots if you can get out to shoot.
