It does look healthy. Actually it showed up again late yesterday and I did some more photos but haven’t posted. Interestingly he has a large bare spot on his rear, just like the bear in the movie ThenGreat Outdoors, where they shot the bear in the rear with a shotgun. Maybe that’s what happened to this one or maybe he rubbed the fur off. I will post a couple of the “Bear Butt” photos and see if anyone has seen anything similar.

Weird. I'm betting on an injury. Seems like if he had mange the rest of his coat wouldn't look so healthy. But I'm no bear expert.

Based on your comment I did a little research and mange can be an issue in Black Bears. Looks like a couple of years ago it was being seen in some bears in Pennsylvania. I couldn’t find any current reference in North Carolina. I have sent photos to NC Wildlife Dept. so we will see what they think.
