Terrified about what? A lot more people are injured by dogs than bears every year. I count myself very lucky whenever I see a bear.

That reminds me that as a kid in north-western South Carolina I spent time running around the woods and we never saw anything more than rabbits and squirrels. Today there are deer, black bear and even black panthers roaming around there.
