I do a fair amount of what I think is intimate landscape photography. I got interested in that approach by way of following photographer Guy Tal and having an opportunity to be in a workshop environment with him. Here's an essay by Guy on the subject https://artwolfe.com/2010/05/26/in-praise-of-the-intimate-landscape-guy-tal/ and Guy's website if full of great examples.

Though a lot of my "intimate landscape" photos are closer-up than my traditional landscape shots, I don't consider most of them true close up shots. Some are definitely not very close. I think of them as "slices" of landscape, chosen and framed for what they say about the larger landscape scene, and how they illustrate it in ways a sweeping wide angle frame cannot. Where I live lacks sweeping magnificent views, so I turned to the intimate scapes partly in self defense but partly because it made sense for my own vision. And I shoot that way when I travel to prettier places, too.

Here's a few I consider intimate landscapes.

OMG...I had no idea I was an "intimate" landscape photographer! The term, to me, simply seems to indicate someone who is a nature photographer, which is what I'd normally call myself if I was putting a term on it. I like it, however, and might begin to use the term. I'm not totally clear on how it would differ significantly from close up photography, but maybe a subset of that as it relates to nature. I'm a big fan of upclose and personal when I shoot just about any shot. Here is a recent shot that I think fits the term of "intimate landscape."

What is an intimate landscape?

An intimate landscape is simply one small part of the scene that is extracted from the overall picture and put in a frame of its own. It’s about the smaller details.

Perhaps intimate urban landscape.
So many ways to interpret things.

Here is one of mine. Instead of a wider view of a mountain stream, I took a closer shot to reveal the play of light on the pebbles, resulting in a more abstract look.

Very nice.

Linda, a majority of the images I see here as "intimate landscape" can be labeled contemplative photography.

Thank you for posting this information. I had no idea about Intimate Landscape Photography. Opens up a whole new way of looking at "landscape" photography. Almost like macro - but on a larger scale. I'm just so happy you gave such great resources.

It seems to me that the "landscape" part of intimate landscape is merely a matter of circumstance. That type of intimate study isn't closely related to traditional landscape photography (which could just as easily be referred to as "scenery photography"). Intimate landscape has more in common with an art-based approach and requires similar perceptions.

I would hate to think that close up views were classed as landscapes simply because the section had become a second contributors gallery. Can a close up of a tree ever be considered a landscape? Likewise pebbles in a stream? or a dandelion in the grass? All very nice pics, but.........

I love your photos Linda.

You always seem to have good ideas to add to the conversation as well.

Thanks,
