Why not format in your camera (as advised by manuals) or in your computer/card reader?

I just initially format a brand new card in the camera.
IF something were to go wrong and I need to format the card (never has) I'd just format it in my computer (Windows) and then again in the camera.

I always format my SD cards in the camera. NEVER on the computer.

And there it is......only took four posts to get to my favorite words..... ALWAYS and NEVER....LOL
To each his own. I'm with LS and format once (usually on my PC (linux)).

For what its worth.... I format my SD cards after importing my images in my camera, did that in the camera before that, and the one before that, along with the one before that and the one before that & all the ones before that!
The only SD cards that I format on my iMac is the one that I put music on for my car player.

Thanks, that's what I was looking for. Like you, it's more convenient to format on the computer after downloading. One-two job done.

I always create a UHH bookmark when I want to remember a post. I never format a camera card in a computer, only in the target camera.

Never had a problem in ten years.)
If you format on the computer, it might be prudent to format again in the camera.
But everyone has different beliefs.

I have done it on occasion. If I was out and bought a new card, in my opinion, either way is perfectly acceptable.

Here is a link to the most recent SD card formatter software from the SD association. It is available in both Windows and Mac versions. Using this software is pretty neutral, in my opinion. If i were using it, I would use it only as an initial format, although the "overwrite format" would be necessary to do any error checking, and based on the information in the user manual, it is not clear that happens with this software.
In any case, I'd certainly reformat again in each camera or device before using.
I've had much more energy around this topic in the past. But people are so dug in on "their" one of the three sides of the issue that it's no longer of any interest to me which option folks choose.

I'm sure you would all agree that you shouldn't format the card, whatever way, before you have some kind of backup for the images.

FWIW: my routine.....
Insert card in reader slot, import raw images into Lightroom as DNG files, also copy original raw files to separate hard drive as backup, Both original and DNG files backed up by Time Machine and DNG files backed up to Amazon prime photo storage. Card returned to camera and formatted for use.

My routine - cut the folder(s) and paste to whatever drive\folder you have set up. I rarely ever format (but when I have, I've done it in camera or the computer - makes no difference). Whatever works for you.
