I am looking for a lense...up to like 500 or 600mm as I do alot of waterowl and birding. I have a Sony a77ii which I love. It is translucent mirror. Cropped not full frame.

Tamron makes their 150-600 G2 in Sony mount. It is about $1200. I use one in Canon mount. The Sigma 150-600s (Sport and Contemporary) does not come in Sony as far as I know but they make a converter for Sony.

I shoot a Sony a-77 slt, I have 3 options.
1 their 500mm f 8 auto focus mirror lens.
2 the older Minolta maxxum 80-200mm L f 2.8 +2x tc
3 the older Minolta maxxum 200mm L f 2.8 +2x tc
I consistently get good -great results.

yes it is, but with a lot of light or higher iso, I get a fast shutter speed.

This is your thread, ask away!
Noise depends upon the ambient light, your lens, your camera and your settings.
In good light, with a 1.4 extender the Tamron G2 can be noise free.

Mirror lenses typically have a fixed aperture and it is high. I have heard some are variable, however they typically start at f/8 or higher.

Do you have any samples with the 500mm mirror lens?

The Minolta 400mm 4.5 is a very nice lens to consider, no, it is not a 500-600, but this one comes with a 1.4 that will get you there.
Besides, you have a cropped sensor, so it's like a 600 f4.5 lens on your Sony A77II, with the 1.4, your at 900mm f6.3.https://www.ebay.com/itm/Minolta-AF-400mm-F4-5-HS-APO-G-Minolta-AF-1-4x-II-APO-Teleconverter/324125346977?hash=item4b77604ca1:g:pg0AAOSwswdeiFyn
One of the really neat thing about this Minolta lens is that you can manually set the exact range of focus you want to use, it aids in quicker focusing, something I wish were on all telephoto lens, sadly, it is only available on the Minolta 300, 400, and 600 primes.

Judy, in looking for a lens of these focal lengths there are two factors that take you into "rare air." First is the length itself, very long. Second is the price, very high. Both of these are considered to be "deal breakers." That translates to extremes, if either is too high or too low the buyer immediately says "No." Your choice now is the length. Borrow or rent each and decide which is your need. Price will determine the quality of the lens. For this you also need to be positive and locked into a definitive target. If I were in your position now is the time to research the two lengths and decide which you need. Then, find a vendor that offers the one you want for the price you set. You can buy new, used, refurbished or you can steal one, you have many options here. Best wishes for you, this lens will get you shots you've never experienced. It is a huge step forward. The choice is yours, choose wisely.

Your camera is the Sony A Mount as you know. I have the a77ii. I had the Minolta AF 500 f8 mirror lens but sold it due to donut like bokeh. If you have the $$ I’d jump on the eBay listing or one similar. Don’t know if Tamron makes an A Mount G2 without an adapter.
