16-Bit Printing

I recently viewed a Lightroom tutorial regarding printing. The presenter's Lr Print Module displayed a "16 Bit Output" checkbox in the Print Job panel of the Print Module. I have a CC subscription to Lightroom so should have the latest version but the 16 Bit Output checkbox is not displayed on my computer which runs on Windows 10. I am using a Canon Pro-100 printer. Is this a 1) Windows problem, 2) a printer problem or 3) operator problem?

Is the file to be printed a 16-bit Tiff? Or, a RAW file? Will the printer accept either of these file types from LR? Or, do you need to use the Canon Print Studio Pro for 16-bit printing?

Images are 16-bit tiff. I am using the Canon XPS printer driver which I assume is 16-bit (that assumption may be part of the problem). Hopefully, it is not necessary to use Print Studio Pro; seems somewhat redundant when printing from Lr/Ps.

You might try the technical support chat with Adobe unless someone with experience with the software and that printer chimes in.

Uncle Google provided the following:

XPS is a Windows feature. I know that Mac version of Lightroom has a check box in Print module for 16 bit printing; Windows version doesn't.

Maybe "XPS" is inherently 16-bit. More research needed.

XPS is for 16 bit printing. I use Qimage for printing and it supports the XPS driver for the Pro100.

If you’re printing JPEG, 8 bit is the best you can get. You have to print from a raw file or tiff file to be able to print in 16 bit.

Got it. I am printing from RAW and .tif files using an XPS driver for my Canon printer. So I am getting 16-bit printing, just didn't know it.

You can use PSP as a plug-in for LR. It actually does a better job than printing from LR, as long as you want a standard size picture.

I went to the Canon website and downloaded PSP. Following is an excerpt from from Canon's installation notes telling which programs PSP will work with:

- Adobe Photoshop CS5/CS5.1/CS6
- Adobe Photoshop CC/CC 2014/CC 2015/CC 2015.5/CC 2017

- Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3/4/5/6
- Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC 2015

Either 1) Canon has not updated PSP to current versions of Lr/Ps, 2) they have not updated their installation notes or 3) I somehow manged to download an out-of-date file from Canon's website.
