A good friend sent me this question. I don't have an answer and I thought some of you might. I know my mother bought a camera and took photos somewhere about 1920 but I don't know if school group photos were being taken as early as 1875. Question follows. Thanks for any help.
Yo Dale, I've got a question about early family group portraits. We have one that we are trying to analyze from Betty's family and in my opinion the dates don't seem to match. It's a typical portrait at a old school house showing the entire class along with its teachers. For the dates and people to work this photo would have to have been taken in 1875. Is that time a little bit early for portrait such as this?
Google Image Search results suggests it was common.

I wouldn't be surprised if such photos were taken in that time frame. Outdoor photos were taken during the Civil War. I have one family photo of 9 people in a family. It's in a studio, but I date it at 1877±2
I found a reference to a school photo taken in 1878. "The school is pictured to the right in this 1878 photograph from the F. J. Haynes Collection (2029.8.31) of the North Dakota State University, North Dakota Institute for Regional Studies."

Kodak began their "you press the button and we do the rest" campaign for amateurs in 1888, so I'm certain that professional pictures were available a few years before that.
The clothe the people are wearing will often get you quite close to the time frame of the photos.
Our historical society has a number of old class photos/ school photos and you can tell the different time periods. This picture was taken around 1910.

Photography was well established by the Civil War which was 15 years before 1875, so I would say that it is very possible.
Yep, it’s possible! Think of all the photos you’ve seen of the Civil War, Lincoln, etc.

That was my first thought. 1875 wouldn't be a problem.
I always had my suspicions that Matthew Brady was a time traveler.
This is a picture of our house that was taken circa 1888. The small girl, 4th from the left, was the great grandmother of a woman that visited us about 40 years ago. She gave us this picture and the timeline for it.
The second picture is how it is now.
