As most of us said, run you software on the Apple and store all your work on external hard drives.

You have had a few good answers. My case iMac 27"-- I have always used an external HD for my photos -the software for Lt Rm is on my internal iMac HD. Let's get that straight first!! I use a second external HD for my back -Up photos and enter the photos for that HD in one of the first lines when you hit import on the right side. I click on "Do you want to make a copy"- and I go to the back-Up drive for those. I ended up purchasing an 8 T Hard drive for all my photos- about $160 bucks- I got tired. of running out of room on the smaller ones. Final
Answer- Yes U can use an external hard drive for all your photos & another external HD for your back-up photos!!!!!

John,
I have two external drives (one for general backup and one for photos). I have a MacBookPro and when the external drive is installed according to the instructions, it became an icon on my monitor display. I load all shots to the external drive and from there into LightRoom.

That has been my experience with an external hard drive plugged into my I-Mac. It works just fine and I feel very secure between it and my I-Cloud storage. If you don't have a ton of hard drive memory space, an external hard drive is really important. Photographs and all the programs associated with post-processing take up space and the files produced from post-processing can be big. I think you have the right idea.

I am thinking about installing a new processing program and putting it on my external hard drive because of space issues. If I do, will Lightroom, on my internal drive, recognize it as a plug-in? I have heard that it probably will not. Does anyone have any experience with this situation?

I asked one of the senior tech's at Apple "What is the life of a MBP?" He said 10 years. You will love a new solid state drive in you laptop 1TB or larger if it will fit. Be a good farmer "Squeeze the life out of your investment like an ole well built tractor."

#1. Get everything off you internal HD (or SSD) that is not a program. This includes all images.
#2. Upgrade your internal storage (again HD or SSD) to at least 1 TB.
#3. Make you external storage a RAID Level 0,1,5, or 6 depending on your preferences.
#4. Keep plenty of free HD/SSD space available for LR/PS to use as swap space.

Then clone your internal drive, and keep the clone up to date , to an identical spare HD/SSD so when the inevitable failure occurs you can simply replace the internal HD/SSD.

I got a Passport 2TB external drive for $105.99 at a local computer store. Instructions in English and several other languages and easy to install.

Though i also use an external drive for a time machine backup it is a wonderful thing to know your laptop is backed up several times a day over the network to NAS like an airport time machine even when it’s not physically connected to anything.

But does it provide auto backups every hour only backing up files that have changed (wirelessly)? This is the magic of the Time Capsule Solid State Drive Technology, which I hope Apple will re-introduce to be even more refined.
