Bought the lens for safaris in Africa (which will not happen for a long while now). I am 74, female, and had the Fuji X-T2 but did not like its handling and Canon zoom better made than Fuji. Also had Olympus M10 with 70-300 which was quite good but resolution wanting. Don't have any Canon lenses except SL3 body with kit lens to try out zoom. Have rented the 5D mark 4 and 90d but may have to rent again to decide. 5D has great shallow depth of field and resolution but is heavy with zoom to handhold. 90d rated good for videos but not great for stills because of viewfinder AF issues? I've been sticking with JPEGs with Fuji and Olympus so may have to learn post processing with Canon. Had 30D and Version 1 of zoom "way back when" and want to make a nice kit now. Like Canon colors for landscapes which Fuji does not match, in MHO.

Do you have a budget? I am assuming you may not, since you can afford an extensive (and expensive) rental path. However, if you do have cash restrictions, both B&H and Adorama have very good return policies useful for nonprofessionals. You can buy the equipment and return within 30 days with no restocking fee in most cases.
Rental is more useful to pros who need a specific piece of equipment for a short term. Also pros can deduct the rental fee on their tax returns.

I have a Canon 6D MK2, with a Tamron 100-400 lens, it's a great setup. I plan upgrading to a Canon 100-400 lens when I can afford to. I believe the 5d's and 6d's have similar bodies, and features.

You make a good point. Rentals are expensive when purposed to handle a certain model since we cannot travel to a store these days.

When I was looking for what to buy/bring for Safari, a Canon rep told me the new 100-400 lens paired perfectly with the 7d Mark ii. That’s the combination I used and was very satisfied with results. Everything functioned perfectly.
Consider the 7d Mark ii. It’s a crop sensor your lens reach will be augmented.

That is an ideal body except very heavy and reviews now rate the 90D as preferable in most respects except speed and AF points. Might be a better choice than 90D though.

I use that lens on a 7DII as well as a 5DIV. For wildlife, I prefer the 7DII except when photographing hummingbirds. If I had to start over with a new body I would seriously look at the 90D. As to your comment about the 90D viewfinder, I’m surprised because it’s the same as any other Canon DSLR. The critical issue is adjusting the diopter adjustment. Other than that issue, what else about the 90D did you not like. 10 frames per second makes that body a great tool for wildlife. Again, the 7DII is my favorite camera with the 100-400 II but I’m sure the 90D would make me happy.

So now it comes down to 90D vs 7DII. What is the issue with the diopter adjustment? 90D is favorable because of lighter weight.

What cameras are there where adjusting the diopter is not an issue? I have to adjust the diopter on all cameras since I do not have 20/20 vision.

It sounded like there was an issue that could not be fixed with ordinary adjustment.

I have owned and used both versions of the 100-400L with and without the 1.4x II extender. The bodies I have used it successfully on are T6s, 5DIV, 6D, 7DII (two different ones) and 80D. I have seen a picture of someone with a 50D and 100-400 and said it worked fine. I did do a double take at that tiny body on that lens.
Most commonly I use it with a 7DII but if I am in a blind and up close I use the 5DIV. I do mostly small birds with some water birds at a local park.

Hi ladysue,

Just a thought, having read through your post. Having bought the lens, you're committed to Canon. Maybe take a look at Canon's mirrorless full frame bodies currently available, not forgetting there's a new one coming very soon. You might find them more easily manageable than a DSLR with that lens - although you'd need the adapter to convert EF lens to R mount.

You have experience with mirrorless cameras, and it would appear (from a long distance !) that Canon are now putting their efforts into their "mirrorless future" - so it might be a way of "future proofing" yourself, if that's possible in the camera world !!

Look up UHH user LFingar - he's a Canon user with good experience now with Canon's mirrorless cameras. I even found a post of his relating to using your new lens on such a camera.

Worth a try ?

Correct. She said an issue with the 90D and the viewfinder and I simply suggested diopter adjustment. It’s surprising how many folks forget that essential adjustment.

I rarely wished for more reach than 400mm on the photo safari I went on - using my 100-400 with a full-frame 6D. My image quality is much better with the full-frame camera - you might consider the new mirrorless lineup.

The new Canon R is an incredible camera and if you can wait a bit longer the R5 will be available. At that point you could find an R that’s lightly used for a great price or spend more for the R5.
