If you want to use this carry around lens for wildlife I’d seriously consider the Tamron 18-400. I use this lens on a 7D as well as a 80D and enjoy the size & weight & results with this lens. I also use the 100-400 II and yes it is sharper but it weighs much more and is probably too heavy to be used as a carry around lens.

The 18-400mm would be an amazing all around lens it sounds like.

If you can fined a 24-105 f/2.8,great, otherwise the 4 would be ok.

The 28-135 is a fine lens for walking around. I also like the 28-105 which is smaller and cheaper with equal image quality. Both are full frame lenses, often originally sold as kit lenses with A2 film cameras. The Canon 18-135 is a good crop sensor lens for general purpose. The 90D with the 24mm prime or the 40mm are also excellent "stealth" lenses and you could probably buy both for the price of the 24-105L.

I am looking to purchase a lens for my canon 90d to use as my primary lens. I am debating purchasing either a canon EF 24-105 f4 l is usm lens for $450 used or a EF 28-135 f3.5-5.6 is usm lens for $140 used as my primary non wildlife lens. I will use this as my travel and landscape lens. Image quality is an important consideration. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks for your input

I have both the 18mm-135mm and the 28mm-135mm. I like them both a lot but mostly use the 18mm-135mm as my walk around. I shoot with the Canon 7D.

On my 80D I use my pancake lens. 24mm f2.8 is very sharp. In fact, this lens will focus to about 6" from the subject.
I also use the 40mm f2.8 pancake. I have read that 40 is a tad sharpen than 24mm. Plus the 40mm will work on FF.
Using pancake lens, weight is much less for walking around.
I agree that some of the 28-135 are very sharp as is the one have.

For sharpness, you cannot beat the 24-105 L lens- however, the 10-18 is known not to be a good lens on the 90D. I also have the Tamron 18-400 as a walk around and have blown up photos to 13 X 19 and they look pretty darn good- Not perfect like the 24-105 but really good! makes a great walk around- try one, you can always send it back if you do not like it- for a few bucks postage you may be surprised!- Amazon I believe pays the postage back.....

Thanks everyone for the feedback!!!! I am going with the canon EF28-135 f3.5/5.6 is usm used from mpb. I know it is a ff but if you don't tell I wont.

I suspect you will also need to use a lens that is wider. 28mm on a 90D has the Field Of View of a 44.8mm on your old 35mm film camera. Not nearly wide enough for me for a general purpose walk-around lens.

When I got my 1st 35mm film camera I only had a 50mm lens. I found the need for wide angles more than telephoto. 35mm wasn't wide enough.

I recommend this:
https://shop.usa.canon.com/shop/en/catalog/ef-s-18-200mm-f-35-56-is

It's an 18-200mm EF-s lens that is very versatile. A friend of mine has this and she and I ventured into one of those Day of the Dead street fairs and while I was always changing my lenses because I've got the holy grail of lenses, she use only one all day and the results were spectacular. I borrowed it for a while and the only thing I found wrong with it was that it had some CA to deal with in some pics that had bright to dark edges. It's easy to fix in post, but I thought I'd point that out so that if you buy one you don't think it's a piece of crap. It really is a good lens. If I didn't already have so darned many lenses I'd get one. I'd probably look for a good used one, or buy a refurb from Canon. I might even consider an import to save money.

...quality of the 28-135mm surprised me but at F/5.6 it is hindering at 135mm.

Hmmmm.... Seems to me the 24-105L is even more "hindered" at 135mm!

"After much consideration I came to realize that the new (~2016) 18-135 IS USM is Canon’s ideal walk around EF-s offering, limiting the reach to “only” 135 to avoid major IQ compromises. Do check it out ... about $275 used but outrageous as brand new."

Totally agree with User ID on this one.

I use a Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC macro lens. Very nice lens, light in weight and produces nice sharp pics. It's formatted for crop sensors. Does the job for me. I think it costs about $400.00 new.

I will second all who have said to go with the EF-S 18-135. I have been using that lens on my 80D for the 3 1/2 years I've had it and it is a great walking around lens. It is the default lens that is on the camera mst of the time. It is wide enough for most situations, while having a reasonable zoom. If I need wider, I use my EF-S 10-18, more zoom the EF 70-300.

My choice was the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4. It is stabilized and super sharp, and close focusing, too. It seems to be on sale at Adorama right now for a little over $300. I think it beats all t'others all around price and IQ--so much so I bought it twice.performance.
