I think it would be better to move files to the external and keep the programs on the Mac.

I could be wrong but any type of application needs to be installed on the internal hard drive so the OS can access it once installed, you may want to look at possibly taking non essential things off of your hard drive and install them on an external drive application type programs are written for your particular operating system.

EXACTLY! It may be possible to do what you're suggesting, but Macs really don't play well that way. Find something else to delete to gain more drive space.

I have the external drive icon on my desktop; what do yo think about putting the new program there?

The Mac uses anything plugged into it as an extra source represented by an icon on the desktop. Unplug the source and the icon will disappear. My iMac is now showing 6 additional icons. Three of those icons represent external drives. The remaining three icons are simply folders which contain additional photos. Putting a program on an external drive might slow it down somewhat but it will operate. Don't try to use another program as a plug-in for LightRoom. Adobe is not kind to other developers and doesn't like to play nice.

I think that software is meant to be used on the mac hard drive in order to get the fastest response possible. I store images on external drives but all software on the mac hard drive. Try it and see what happens, that might be the best approach.

Late 2015 iMac 27
2TB and 1TB external SSD in Thunderbolt dock.

I boot off the external 2TB SSD and store files on it and back up on the other and the internal HDD.
The external SSD is wildly faster booting and in use than the internal HDD.

I do not keep anything on my Mac I save all I want to keep on 2 external hard drives. If it is withe saving put it on two external hard drives. I had a drive fail a long time ago (wanted thousand to TRY to get it back). Use 2 drives.

Did i read it right, you wanted to put a software on the external drive? If it is a portable app/software, no problem it should work. If not, you might have issues, specially when you insert it on another port as it will become a different address.

External drives are meant to increase storage space, not operating system/installed software space.

A USB drive on a Mac will always have the Same Name no matter where it is plugged in. That may be true of Windows but I doubt that also.

With that in mind I would seriously do some Boot Drive (Macintosh HD) house keeping and put all of your programs there. Your software will run better and it will even get backed up when you do your weekly backup, hopefully with two clones of your Boot Drive.

Good luck

I would take everything that’s not an application or app support file and get it off your internal hard drive. That should free up space for Luminar. All apps should be on your main system drive. Nothing else needs to go there.

Quite right - your program will likely run much slower, and can be buggy when accessed through a USB port, Firewire or other remote access system. Put the photos on the external drive and put the software on the internal drive.

My suggestion would be to reserve your internal drive for only os and applications, placing all data, such as images, on something external. Thunderbolt 3 is the fastest. I use that and Synology NAS devices and have over 500,000 images stored. Best of luck.

I am running a MBP 2019 15.5, with three SSDs external and three platoon drives external- no issues.

You can put the data where you want but my experience is MacOS wants the programs to be in /Applications.

As lon as you external drive is bootable and you install it on that drive it should work but you’ll have to try it a better answer is to get a thunderbolt ssd external drive and run your system off it. Luminar 4 is not the fastest app. The ssd will speed you’re system up greatly
