Today I bought my 16th new car. It was a strange experience. First, it was by appointment only. There were a few people buying cars, but nobody could come in to browse. Everyone, most everyone, was keeping their distances. There were plastic shields set up on the desks.

My salesman said if I wanted a test drive that would be fine, but he can't get in the car with me. I didn't need the test drive as I went with a friend of mine a couple of months ago when she bought the same car. As for going over the options, the salesman could show them on the computer screen, but couldn't show me in the car.

I wound up buying, and taking delivery even though I didn't have the money in my checking account to cover what was owed above my trade in. He said next week is fine.

All this seemed a little strange, but the strangest of all was concluding the deal without a handshake. It just seemed wrong.

I bought a car like that once. I knew what I wanted, what options, and the color. We negotiated over the phone and I just went and picked up the car. There was paper work but when the salesman wanted to show me all the whistles and bells, I declined as I thought I could figure them out.

Well, let's see how this pans out. The CDC has their rough numbers up for the current flu season:

https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/preliminary-in-season-estimates.htm

Using the averages of the ranges given, it translates to about 47 million cases known this flu season, and 43 thousand deaths. Definitely more deaths in the US than by COVID-19, but ...

Worldwide as of April 12, 1.8 million COVID-19 cases known have caused 112 thousand deaths. Stated differently, one twenty-fifth (1/25) the number of cases has caused close to 4 times the deaths.

In the US (April 12), 532 thousand cases have resulted in over 21 thousand deaths. Another way of reporting this is saying that the flu would have to infect 24 million people to equal what COVID-19 did with just half a million.

While we are way behind on testing (and that's another thread for sure!), there would have to be a **huge** change to bring these two illnesses even close to one another. Oh, and **both** sets of numbers suffer from not knowing about many mild cases. That's not an issue owned solely by the new virus nor is there any data to support specious claims trying to minimize its nature.

Bear in mind that SARS-Cov-2 appears to be *extremely* contagious since there is a significant delay in symptom onset for many.

I know which illness I'd choose to get...

Fake News. The common flu was ‘credited’ with killing perhaps 24K Americans during the six month flu season this year. Covid-19 will have killed that many in three months even with the so-called “BS” restrictions. If Covid-19 does kill fewer people in six months than maximum estimate for what the flu did, it will be solely because those so-called “BS” restrictions hold down its toll in the last three months.

If you are going to claim that I support Mr. Trump, you demonstrate even less capacity for thought than I had thought. To paraphrase Ana Navarra, a commentator who normally supports the Bush Family, I would vote for a potted plant before I ever voted for him.

The CDC has estimated that 24K - 62K Americans died of the flu in the six moths that just ended.
That is fact!

So far, in the almost three months since the Covid-19 virus was imported from China, 22K American deaths have been counted.
That is fact!

Right now, roughly 2K American death are being added to the Covid-19 list every day,
That is fact!

If this rate continues, the Covid-19 count will pass the maximum flu estimate in just about four months.
That is fact!
