I have hit that Magic age where my hands aren't steady. I am using my tripod more frequently with my Nikon D7100. Is there another device I can use besides the little gimmick that Nikon makes with more distance... more non directional to set the shutter off... something simple... I do not need bells and whistle... No, I don't want to do a camera delay setting...already increasing shutter speed. Non cellphone solution... still need to use the hot shoe for the Nikon Commander for Speedlites... I thank you all in advance...

NIkon makes a cabled shutter release http://www.martgreat.com/nikon-d7100-remote-shutter-release.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI3fnJ24je6AIVgx-tBh3cJgwTEAQYASABEgLZAPD_BwE

What's wrong with that?

I always used a wired remote with my D7100 instead of the IR remote. You can extend the cord about as long as you need it with extensions.

I have Panasonic and Olympus cameras and both have cell phone apps for remote shutter release. Does Nikon?

On a D7100 you would need to add wifi capability using a WU-1A dongle on the camera, then it can connect via an app that includes live view tethering as well. The newer D series with wifi and/or bluetooth built in probably have an app for shutter release, extending the range and usability.

I have and use both wired and wireless Nikon remotes for my D7500 and D7100. I got the wireless remote first, for the D7100. That body has receivers on both front and back, so it was very easy and convenient. The D7500 only has a receiver on the front, so you have to stick your hand around in front to trigger the release. So I tend to use the wired release more on that body.

Cheers,
Dick

The problem with the infrared triggers is you have to aim at the front of the camera. Nikon makes a wifi adapter. The wu-1, I believe. I have one, and it works ok. But requires a smart phone and some patience.

Pick up one of these. Easy to use and can be used from any direction and can trigger a remote flash.

Camera shake can be eliminated at shooting at a 1/1600 sec. or higher. YES, try it. It is that simple.
And, consult your speed-light manual on shooting at higher than 1/250 sec. flash sync.

Wrong RowdyRay. The D7100 hasa receiver on the rear of the camera also.

Check out the Pixel wireless remotes. They have several models. I have the TW-283. It is simple to use, but has a lot of features if you ever need them. The receiver that connects to the camera can mount to the hot shoe or not since it has its own battery. I just let mine hang if I need the hot shoe. It's not infrared so you don't have to worry about being in the right position and I've used mine from as far away as 25 feet.
