When any species becomes too closely related it becomes susceptible to a disease that can potentially wipe it out. The "Big Mike" bananas are an example of how a species became extinct while other species survived.

This is not weird, it's just false. Some versions of Koontz' book refer to a Whuhan-400 virus, developed as a weapon. The passage about a prediction for 2020 is unrelated and doesn't come from a Koontz' novel or any reliable source. Whoever initiated this is a not-so-innocent prankster. Let's not help that person by perpetuating this nonsense.
