In WI it is legal to bait. Check your local hunting regulations.

Just plant tulips and hosts. Xxxx deer just ate all the 400 tulips I planted last fall and are starting in on the hosta that are just starting to sprout. My trailcam even got them with the tulips hanging from their mouth.

I live in similar conditions. All you need is a flower garden and water feature. They come within ten feet of the house - to the point I rarely (unless terminally bored) take deer pix anymore. There are also food plot kits, but I'd put that elsewhere on the property if I needed it. Appears you have found a neat solution in your situation.

Yes a flower garden.
We have literally herds come through at night wiping out flowers unless we put a wire cage around the flowers. And we live in the city (On the edge of the forest though)

I live on an isolated hill top surrounded hundreds of acres of woods and farms. I have cut a long trail into the woods that I frequently walk with a camera in my hands. The deer can hear me coming and run away from me. I have never got a good picture of a deer while walking my trail. I have gotten a few good shot when the deer come near my house.

To increase my odds of getting a good deer photo I put up a deer feeder yesterday. There is 40 pounds of feed corn with molasses in that thing. I have a 600mm f/4 lens that I can use in the house and point it out a window. I have been looking out the widow looking for wildlife to discover the feeder. Nothing yet:

I still remember as a kid we used to fish near rt. 666 in Pennsylvania. We would camp by the creek a couple days before trout season, we would feed trout salmon eggs, just toss them into the stream. Then, when trout season opened, the salmon eggs we threw in had hooks in them, always caught our limit. Oh, how I miss those care free days.

I don't think it legal to shoot them at a baited spot in PA. I'm so isolated that no one would know, but still. I'm just looking to photograph them. Here are two photographs I took through the closed window when a deer was at the same spot I placed the feeder. These were taken with a 300mm f/2.8 lens. I also have a 600mm f/4 lens that is even better! When I use the 600mm lens I can be half way across that big room from the window, far from the window.

It's surprising to me how good a photo I can take through a closed double pained window. I think the feeder might let crank open that window if they are occupied with eating corn, and can I stay back far from the open window. I hope to find out soon. It's been three days since I filled that feeder and nothing has visited it yet as far as I know. It's been raining like crazy.

The molasses will not attract deer. It will attract bears. That will be the end of your feeder! Just use shelled corn. Can buy a 80 lb. bag of corn at a local feed mill for around $12 here in north central Pa. Bear could still be attracted to it. Throw a little corn around the feeder on the ground. This should kick start the deer to using the feeder.

In Pa. it is illegal to hunt, with a gun or bow, over bait, except a few countries near Philadelphia. It is legal to hunt a food plot, even if it’s planted with corn.

I don't known the laws in Pennsylvania, but here in New York State that is a no no to have a feed like that. If you have it set up for camera, that camera can become a rifle.

New York what a pain in the a$$ State...

Take your lawn tractor, farm tractor or 4 wheeler and travel over the trails slow and often. After awhile the deer will just watch you drive by. The trick is to not look at them directly as you go by and no big movements. At times they are 20 feet from me, just watching. Slowly pick up the camera and get their portraits.

We have a winding two mile road into our village and deer just stand on the side and ignore us as we drive by. The nerve of them! Years ago they would run, sometimes into our car. I have credit for two kills according to our insurance company.

Thank you for the information.

BTW, I bought my forty pounds of "Deer Feed" for $6.35 at a local feed store. The bag was marked as deer feed and even has a picture of a deer on the bag. When I got it home and read the ingredients I saw molasses was included. I can smell it and the corn is a little sticky.

Dave, try locating near a body of water. Creeks, streams, ponds, lakes, etc. are where they will pose during long drinking spells. The setting of your feeder is out in the open and offers NO protection. Deer will not frequent anything in the open. A clump of conifers will offer a choice setting, as will any other wooded surrounding. Keep in mind that wildlife eat to live, and live to eat. One more item to ponder, deer do not normally eat with their heads up in the air. When their heads are low they are able to scan the horizon for potential trouble. Best of luck in your quest, the shots you seek can be addictive.

I had lots of deer in my yard in CT. I was always trying to get rid of them. They destroyed a lot of plants and carry Lyme disease. I tried to make their life on my property as miserable as possible.
