I’ve been experimenting with On1 as a plug-in to LR, but haven’t used it from scratch. Can anyone suggest a workflow for using On1 alone?

As a database, image organizer ON1 doesn't compete with LR but it may be more than adequate for many. You can use it as just a file browser or create albums to manage that are more like LR's catalog. A lot of folks who don't want to use LR's catalog appreciate ON1's additional flexibility.

As a raw file editor it's very competitive with the feature set in LR, open your raw file, process it and export a finished JPEG for whatever purpose you intend. If the image requires more editing pick up a raster editor like Affinity or PS Elements. Then export a TIFF from On1 for further processing in the raster editor.

I've been using On1 2020 for several weeks now and have been using LR 6 for several years. I'm determined to use On1 more and getting used to it. As much as I hated the idea I have also subscribed to on1 plus for at least this year to speed my learning curve and find it's well worth the cost in getting me up to speed, YMMV. The DAM organizer if very similar to LR and just as good.

I suggest downloading the trial version and reviewing the many videos as well as the user guide. I find it to be comperable to LR, better at some features and fills my needs enough to move from LR 6.

Hey, folks, I already have On1 and have used it as a plug-in. What I am looking for is a workflow if and when I want to use it as a stand-alone.
I assumed that I made that clear in my original post.

A lockdown is a good reason to try that software you've always wanted to try but lacked the time.

Trying new software gives you a valid excuse to avoid cleaning the house.

Hee hee, how adorable that you think everyone here reads the opening post slowly and thoughtfully, and multiple times if needed to get it all. And yes, I am sometimes guilty of same poor habits and comprehension skills 😇

Best of luck, John. If I run across someone who uses the software, I will surely direct them to this thread!

I've been using ON1 for years now starting with Vs. 9. It is the only one I have ever needed to do just about anything. Really love the program.

I've been using ON1 RAW 2020 since it's first day of release because I didn't want to pay Adobe's subscription fee. Call me cheap. Anyway, I use the same folder structure I used with LR and use PR2020's cataloguing feature to speed up browse but unlike LR there is no data base to get corrupted so I don't risk losing all PR2020 work at once. Next I import photos to a single directory where I cull and do initial edits and finally I move to subject directories whence the show up as catalogued images. As for edit work flow I usually take selected image, crop as needed, and then apply various tone and color corrections to make subject 'pop'. PR2020 has great set of image controls for the entire image as well as local adjustments so what I usually do is apply global edits first then any desired specific effects then local adjustments. For any given image this usually takes 1 to 2 minutes but most of my images are of birds and wildlife so the subject of interest is narrowly focused.

I believe Anthony Morganti has a suggested work flow on his Utube channel. He has more than a dozen tutorials on his channel.
