Just for the record- .380's & their ammo have come a long way in the past 35 years. Of recent I wanted something smaller than a .45 for a 'canoe gun' I chose this:

good thing- first trip out, while docking my wife lost her balance and dumped me, in the drink- I unloaded, shook it off, blew it out when I got home, and all was well. In addition, I had a Nikon SC50 P&S with me. Took the battery and card out, shook it good, took it home and let air dry for a week or so and put everything back- there have been no problems. Nikons are tough

You cannot expect LEO's to protect you. That isn't their job. JMHO :)

I am also female, and it drives my family nuts when I tell them I am "going for a ride"(they know I like to wander with my camera!)Pepper spray is a good idea. I am a city bus driver, and feeling fearless most of the time, so I kind of forget how vulnerable we all can be while out wandering alone. You can never be too cautious these days.

i have a nifty little .32ACP that i carry when i want a little something but don't feel like lugging my .45 around with me. it's flat - just 3/4 inch thick - and weighs just 7 oz. empty. fits into a holster in my back pocket. you'd never know it was anything other than a wallet. the .32 isn't a big stopper, but with Silvertips at close range, it's certainly enough to take care of the typical street thug...

still no CC in The People's Republic Of Daley, trust me the Adam Henry's are all packing, the Chicago Mob are either packing or their hired help is. Just the honest, law abiding citizens are kept from protecting themselves...outside their home.
Another thing I've not heard here...I am a Vietnam Vet, long time gun person, hunter, etc. I have most certainly seen what various caliber bullet wounds can do to the human body. I thank God I have never had to shoot a human being. I don't ever want to be in a position to even point a weapon at another human. I know people who's lives were wreaked by being forced to take a life. All you gung ho pistol packing big talkers need to sit down and ask yourselves...really think about taking a life. It is not a good thing. Having said that...if some Adam Henry is about to do life threatening harm me or mine...I can and will pull the trigger and put a round where it counts. Dear God, I hope that never happens. I try real hard not to ever put myself in such a position...

I understand mudshark, I for one was in nam 4 years worth.
I still have memories that haunt me.
Though I advocate the CC Permit for people, believe me,I Hopt that they never have to use it. It is a Life changing experiance, mostly not good. How-ever I believe better you than me in a troubled situation.
My own opinion.

I am CCW in Nevada...there aren't many National Parks or many State Parks that even allow firearms in, so for me, it is worthless!

Bringing someone with is wise...having some backup helped me this weekend. I went (alone) to a National Park in Utah in the wee hours. A deer was grazing, so I stopped to take a pic. That bastard deer thought it might be funny to lure me with cuteness...shaking its head and pounding its feet in the dirt...so I thought I would try and get closer. There was this loud clack of some sticks and the deer ran off - it was another photog on the trail and he said that, that the deer was about to work me over. I am glad I had my mild-mannered-non-stupid inadvertant trail buddy looking out for me, or I could've had a stich or two, to go with my crappy photo shoot!!!

Fits in a small pocket or in top of my boot. Boyfriend says he is more worried about what/who I run into than he is about me. Bless him!

beats a 280 all to heck now doesn't it. I like you am a believer in the big bullet going in, bigger hole coming out theory. you don't need 18 rounds of 9mm to stop an attack at close range. If you do then instead of shooting photos with your camera, you need to be shooting targets with your hangun. As a former cop, i salute your taking responsability for your safety. the police can not be everywhere, one major accident can tie up most of a small towns cops. a police whistle will do you no good and in fact will probably get the snot kicked out of you. a tripod makes a nice club, a folding knife in a camera bag or even a large cannister of pepper spray would work better. I also hope you are a member of the national rifle association, who are batteling the obama liberals repeated attempts to circumvent the 2nd amendment.

I'm curious, or perhaps they have changed the size of guns since I was carrying, but how does one fit a .45 Cal weapon into a "small pocket." And in my day a 410 was called a shotgun, and we used them when hunting rats or snakes. A blast from a 410 might make a grown man rather upset with you. Enough, perhaps, to take it away from you and beat you over the head with it.

It is called an American Derringer. 5" long, shoots the .410 from the top barrel & .45 from the bottom so I can pick my fire-power. My cop buddies said it is a great woman's gun but it can snap wrist bones on the shooter. Better a broken wrist than my body being broken or dead. I do wear a wrist brace anyway though. From experience, a .410 to the chest at 15 feet WILL stop a grown man. He will be released from jail in 4 1/2 yrs. I am still here.

I do not have a Concealed Weapons Permit - but when I go out doing remote photography, that does not stop me from carrying a gun - preferably in plain sight ( as a deterrent ) in a shoulder holster along with at least one knife and squirt gun of ammonia. The gun is a small, lite weight .22 double action revolver using the most potent ammo I can find. So I am ready for people, wildlife, and dogs - what ever the situation dictates. Better to be arrested for some broken law than DOA at the morgue !
