Bill Gates wasn't really an visionary, he just read a few books. - "The Coming Plague - Newly Emerging Diseases in a World Out of Balance" by Laurie Garrett was first printed in 1994 and I'm sure there are many before then. "The River : A Journey to the Source of HIV and AIDS" by Edward Hooper (1999) is another one. We (our society) don't remember the lessons of the past such as the Spanish Influenza of 1917 - 1918 so, here we go again.

You are correct about him not being a visionary. He was head of a disjointed software company that developed the most bloated, archaic OS known and then hired customer support reps that refused to accept the blame that their software was the problem. I have no respect for him at all, other than being one of the biggest shysters in the world......

You do know that Congress is involved in making decisions concerning our country, do you not? But, The House of Representatives were so concerned about getting Trump out of office they couldn’t get anything else done. (We don’t need to get into how the House broke laws in their actions against Trump.). That said, when the leaders of the Dems in the House finally got involved in a bill concerning the virus, they couldn’t concentrate on the virus with it’s urgency.

And on the other side, the Republican based Senate was so concerned about keeping Trump in office, the same occurred. Some were paying attention, but many can't walk and chew gum at the same time. Then perhaps the correct answer is simply he's he wrong guy to run this country. He didn't seem to keep his own companies from going bankrupt. Just like in his prior businesses, he's lost more times than he's won--but he keeps having hunches!
And I used to be a Republican but Nixon cured me of that. Like a drinker learns--being drunk lasts a long time--lesson learned!

I am amazed Bill Gates was so accurate. This is a video that has scary statistics that I never knew regarding how many people died, worldwide, in 1918.

Some people see things other people won't. Unfortunately, we did not listen and follow through with the necessary action.

I'm not able to post the link properly but this is the address the TED web site gave me.

Please fact check this and the other myriad of misinformation about the covid-19. “Health Affairs: Mapping Misinformation In The Coronavirus Outbreak” might be a place to start. The internet is often the source of misinformation, lies and conspiracy’s. Don’t be like the Internet.

Yes - it is human nature to lay blame - including recriminations - unfortunately we have to deal with the current situation regardless. But - when this is all over then there are lessons to learn - and they should include limiting the wealth that any one person can possess world wide. So far as this current pandemic is concerned, there is not a country in the world that did not start off by putting their economy before lives.

Have you read about Bill Gates and Warren Buffets pledge, signed by 14 billionaires to give away at least half their wealth for humanitarian causes? How about read in a Carnegie library? Love them or hate them the rich do give away their money. Where would you set the upper limit? A million a yer? 10 million? Who would hold these overachievers in line? The government? The same people that gave the Kennedy Center $25,000,000.00 as part of the pandemic relief funding. Just before the politically connected board laid off the musicians despite an endowment. Of multiple millions. AIDS research, polio vaccine distribution in third world countries is often funded by the very rich. Wealth envy? Political differences? You do not have to like them to recognize the contributions they make.

We need a 3rd Party in this country. A "Patriots" party, where you have to be a true conservative, earnestly interested in saving this country and going back to the grass roots with 1950's morals and visions that our grandparents had. Members have to have kids and cannot be under 40 years old--no Millennials or GenZ. You are what you are born and none of this gender identity crap. Good old boys are welcome. You cannot have an accumulated wealth of more than $1M, so that you don't put your earnings ahead of the environment. No more than 2 term limits and pork barrels are not permitted on any of your bills you submit. I just described probably 60% of the population, you think? I dunno, just some musings during quarantine.

Well, let’s see; you mentioned 10,000 ventilators at least 4 times in your diatribe against Trump. You do know that Congress is involved in making decisions concerning our country, do you not? (We don’t need to get into how the House broke laws in their actions against Trump.). That said, when the leaders of the Dems in the House finally got involved in a bill concerning the virus, they couldn’t concentrate on the virus with it’s urgency. They had to hold things up with provisions for pork barrel items such as increasing funds for NPR, solar & wind energy, & certain libraries, etc. instead of just concentrating on virus mitigation & trying to stabilize the economy; which , by the way, helps ordinary citizens to be able to pay bills & survive economically.
By the way, I have in the past voted for Democrats I figured were better suited for an elective office.
Well, let’s see; you mentioned 10,000 ventilators ... (show quote)

Well yes, but at this time Trump continues to lie about things and does not work to clear bottlenecks.. as yesterday started talking about FBI, Impeachment, etc... after he said he was not aware there was a test shortage and also said he had a 10,000 ventilator stockpile so there was no shortage. The things in this paragraph are Here-and-now... not the past. We are running second to Zimbabwe in getting things done; worse than 3rd world. Will trump re-establish the system for pandemic planning that Obama set up.. trump bought new atomic bombs instead.

Elon Musk, so I read, has acquired ventilators from China and will ... "Tesla's chief executive and co-founder Elon Musk tweeted Tuesday his Palo Alto-based company is focused on delivering desperately-needed ventilators to hospitals and medical centers, free of charge." While Trump sits on 10,000 claiming that they are not needed.
https://abc7news.com/elon-musk-tesla-ventilators-coronavirus-cases/6065934/

"President Trump said that there are almost 10,000 ventilators being “held back” from distribution because “the surge is coming.”

“We also are holding back quite a bit. We have almost 10,000 ventilators that we have ready to go. We have to hold them back, because the surge is coming and it's coming pretty strong and we want to be able to immediately move it into place without going and taking it, so we're ready to go," Trump said."
https://www.cnn.com/world/live-news/coronavirus-pandemic-03-31-20/h_d7910f7f1f9212668bcb09785128d04e

So, people are dying while Trump sits on 10000 ventilators. As you gasp for air, Delderby, I am sure you will not blame Trump... or will you? Your despiration for air will change your mind.
Well yes, but at this time Trump continues to lie ... (show quote)

Who has seen these 10,000 ventilators that are being held back? Anyone can say they have a stockpile. Of course, Trump would never lie about anything important . . . .

I think some patriots favor adherence to American values, such as equality, religious freedom, the pursuit of happiness, etc. 1950s morality included discrimination against minorities and women, carte blanche for assaulting or arresting gays and lesbians, barring people of color from public schools, the imposition of one religion on students, Joe McCarthy's anti-Communist crusade that destroyed the careers of countless artists and intellectuals, rampant anti-Semitism and xenophobia, etc. A return to 1950s morality? I hope not.

I'll have to agree with much of that. The country didn't have much of a safety net either. My father was killed hunting before I turned one Y/O--my sister was 6 at the time. Luckily we lived with Grandma, but she was very old too and only received something around $60 per month for something called "Old Age and Survivors" insurance. Try and live on that! We were destined to live poorly except that the family helped when necessary but they weren't that giving either. We made our own soap, grew our own fruit and vegs when possible. When I started grade school, Mom got two PT jobs. One paid $.45 per hour. I stayed home with Grandma most evenings. She worked hard and we finally were able to see a bit of hope.

In all honesty, Gates was a good spokesman and advocate. But, "we" all warned about the possibility of a pandemic after 911. Remember there was the anthrax scare, then the swine flu and h2n1. We developed very involved plans about how to respond to a future outbreak, and developed a plan to have hospitals equipped to handle 5 very sick patients at once, with back up for another within 15-30 minutes and then 100 over the next 8 hours. We helped develop a strategic stockpile of medications and durable medical equipment. Someone, on the federal level, made the decision to eliminate all of these plans and all future planning. You all see the results!

Toxdoc42,

We still have all those plans in one form or another. The CDC has issued out grants every year to local and state health departments to update plans, conduct training, and do various types of exercises as well as to purchase supplies. I have been involved for the past couple of years with Texas, Kansas, and Florida doing these things, especially the exercises.

The difficulty has been with local and state health administrators and hospital administrators only doing the minimum required and paid for by the feds. Then the plans get put up on the shelf until the next update as they work on current and routine priorities. Preparedness, mitigation, and resilience are mentioned, usually as buzzwords, but seldom implemented in detail. It has been that way with humans since Adam and Eve and Noah. That is why I like to refer "lessons learned" as "lessons identified" because we really don't learn from them.

The Dem controlled House, in addition to fulfilling their constitutional duty of impeaching a corrupt and treasonous president, also passed hundreds of bills since winning the House in the mid-terms, but Senator McConnell has blocked all of them. The GOP Senate, after swearing an oath to serve as impartial jurors in the Trump impeachment trial, followed leader McConnell, who said before the trial began that he would get an acquittal. So the Dems continued to do their work as a legislative body while the GOP decided the verdict before the trial. Who, then, was doing their duty?

Blame the virus for infection.

Blame China for not yelling louder, sooner.

Blame the current regime in Washington for being bull-headed science deniers who think lies and prayers can avoid a pandemic. It had to hit them in their faces before they could learn to trust the real experts standing right next to them.

Bastards! They have no decency... no sense of real leadership in a crisis... no moral courage, no sense of cause and effect, and no sense of responsibility for those whom they were elected to SERVE.

I am a fiscal conservative who was registered as a Republican for the 43 years before 2016. But the Libertarian Centrist in me just says no to narcissistic, infinitely self-interested, megalomaniacal muff-grabbing morons like Trump. He will go down in history as the most polarizing and ignorant figure ever to sit in the Oval Office.
