I would like to use a small monitor [ with a HDMI pot ] and connect it to my Nikon D750 via the mini HDMI port.....will this work without and special programs?
It works fine on a qled tv. The tv will find the device and presto. I think that if the camera is the only device hooked to the monitor, it will find it instantly.
Electrically, HDMI is HDMI. The key is having the right cable ends for the devices you're connecting.
Consult your D750 manual for information on the cable you need.
Do you know what format video the camera would be sending to the monitor? I guess it's quite low in resolution so a monitor larger than the built in screen isn't needed.

HDMI supports most everything — 1080P and 4K among them. My six year old Lumix GH4 does 4K. It has HDMI out.
Many cameras also have an “AV Out” jack, which sends composite video at 480P.
