sounds silly but put fresh batteries in it or recharge the battery if its a li-ion. might want to clean the contacts with a pencil eraser. if it is not the batteries then it needs to be repaired.

Tried two fresh batteries no luck . Must be a gear problem very little time on G9 just a backup.

I have a friend who has won ++ a lot of awards from her G9 pictures with some ability of PSE 8

You may have success by tapping on the camera when turning on and off. Don't hit the lens assembly, that'll make it worse.

I had success with a camera by tapping the camera on a table as I was cycling power. It gave the owner another 3 weeks before he scrapped the unit. A g9 is worth getting repaired.

It has been my experience that all self retracting lens eventually fail. If it is a battery problem you have no alternative but to send it in. I have had 4 lesser Canons and an olympus all go bad the same way.

I have a G9 and it works fine. But, I had the same problem on a different camera, a 5 mp Kyocera P&S. I had the camera dealer send it out for repairs, but I had to fix the problem myslef when it came back. All I did was to insert and pry a very thin pin next to the lens encasement, give it a slight nudge, and the problem went away.
I use the G9 as my P&S additiuon to my Pentax K5. Both are very worthy performers.

Sorry very late in my response. Canon said I needed a new lens assembly $140+. Took both sides off and realigned a gear. It's been working great as a spare car camera.

I had the same issue with G9. Canon Service is way too pricey and they have created the problem in a first place.
I went with : http://www.camerasandparts.com in December 2013.
For less $$, excellent personal service and "real" friendly people.
Now I have G9 in much better shape then Canon factory quality.
Be well and enjoy this fantastic small jewel.
