It's a simple solution. If you don't have to work, give your son your car and you stay home. Or, perhaps your son's insurance company will rent him a car until he's able to buy one.

Call dealerships/businesses in surrounding states. Many will sell you a car, collect taxes, etc. as if they were located in your state. You then have a temporary tag until paperwork is forwarded to your county. Now is a good time to buy as, obviously, sales are way down.
Rental car. Ask the claims agent if he qualifies, and if there’s any day limits. Unless he already had one, and used the rental time up, in which case he might Speak to the rental branch manager, and ask if he can rent at “insurance rates”.
In CA the car dealerships are open for business. My wife and I just went to the dealership to replace a car.
