Moving photos into LR from ext HD

Looking for best way to get them into library from small ext hd. Should I simply move them into a folder on my larger hd, then import them?

Be sure to use Lightroom to move them and you will be fine. Use the folders view on the left side of the screen. If you have them all in one folder on the external drive you can move/copy that folder to your hard drive in one step.

No reimporting needed. You don’t want to do that as you’ll lose your changes.

What I planned to do, and am doing as I write this. Thought maybe there was something else.
Thanks.

Couple of points...

IF the files are already imported into Lightroom and you wish to move them to a different drive/folder...you can easily drag and drop them from within Lightroom, start with one image, drag it from the folder it is in to a different folder in the left hand folder panel. Once you see how it works you can do folders at a time. If you need to first create a new folder/drive, click the + sign in the folder panel to create a folder.

IF the images on the External drive have never been imported into Lightroom you can copy or move them to any destination in Lightroom during a normal import from where they currently are. The destination folder is set in the lower right hand panel of the import screen. No need to copy the files first, Lightroom will do that for you.

The way I read the OP's post, he wants to get them into his LR library, so they apparently not there already. So, he can do just what he said, which is to move them, then import them.

Alternatively, he could leave the external drive connected, and import them from it, leaving them where they were. LR doesn't care if you have files on more than one drive.

Lightroom never has image files "in" it. It only records that they exist and where they are. "Importing" them creates previews. You can move them, but you can also have photo files on as many external or internal drives as you want.

YES. Put them where you want them to reside then link up to LR and work on any images only from LR thereafter (this assumes they are new images). Easy.

You can import them directly from the external drive, using the copy option, which will leave the originals on the external.

Please understand that you don’t "move" photos into the LR library. LR simply records where the photos are located when you "Import" them. That’s the proper nomenclature. Before Import using LR, you can put the photos any place you desire. After Import, LR will know where they are as long as you use LR to move them from one folder or device to another.

You can leave them on the external hard drive which I guess you use to save space on your computer. If you use a laptop you might want to create smart previews on import then you can edit them without the external hard drive connected. When you export, you can export from the smart previews which will give you small images good enough for web display. Or if you want full resolution, export when connected to your external hard drive.

IDguy nailed it. Use the import function in LR. It’s very straight forward. I use it redularly to import new images from my mobile backup device.

Sounds to me like he wants them on his internal drive. Simple to import them directly into the location he wants using LR. No need for separate operations.

Yes. I do that too. Both work nicely in LR.
