Going for a walk with some ancient photo gear, by today's standards.

Walked in the sun at Fort Worden State Park, Wa., near Port Townsend, on Saturday afternoon. I did in fact keep a good distance (over 6 feet) from all other humans as we are advised to do. I am never without a camera when out and about in good weather (or even bad) here in Western Washington and for this adventure I had a Nikon D700, which I still love, and a Nikon 28-200 AFD lens, plus an older Nikkor 300 F4.5 AIS in a bag, just in case I wanted something long. Posted here are a couple of grab shots - nothing special at all. There is so much perfect bird photography on this site its almost embarrassing to put up stuff like this, but the point of it all is, it was fun. I put the old AIS 300 on the D700 and it was like a trip back to the film days - using different f stops and ISO settings (well, that would have been hard with film...) to "bracket" the eagle - who sat where there was no clear shot, only through a thousand little branches. These older low megapixel full frame cameras with their "big eyes" still make such nice files. I have always felt the 28-200 AF-D lens is very underrated (as long as you do not want to focus too close and the light is bright enough to shoot at 5.6 or 8) and the old 300 Nikkor MF lens looked surprising sharp despite its age, with minimal fringing. So, here is to enjoying those moments on sunny days with friends and family and good old reliable gear. Sometimes the simple pleasure of capturing the moment, whatever your gear, is what the joy of photography is all about.
