[quote=FTn]If the machine is new it is running Windows 10. DOS died at least 20 years ago.

DOS is always in the background and can be brought up if you know the command, then the old DOS formats still work.

It's not DOS in the background that you are talking about. Windows ceased to have DOS as it base long ago.

You are talking about the Command Prompt. And it is not available if you can't login to Windows.

DOS is alive and well regardless of any rumors that are out there.
Get to a command prompt and type, \\Format c:/u/mbr/, you will have a brand new machine.
You can now load and configure any SW you like.

Have him go through the pain of setting it back up, he won't forget it again.

So, HOW DO YOU GET TO THE COMMAND PROMPT IF YOU CAN"T LOGIN TO WINDOWS????

And what do you mean by your suggestion for getting a brand-new machine? Not that I really care, because you sound like a fool.

I want to once again thank everyone for their assistance on helping me get back on a computer. I'm sorry this string evolved into name calling and people doubting the accuracies of other members. I have posted an instruction which I found on Utube that explains how to perform resetting a password. At about 6:42 he enters what looks like DOS commands. I'm not computer savvy enough to proclaim absolutely that those are DOS commands he is using, but it sure looks like it to me. Chill everyone and thanks again!

I couldn't download the link but do the following:
Key in this question on UTube: How to get on a computer if you have forgotten the password. Then find the instruction for Windows 10 by Torogi PRO. Please view this before making any more statements about what can or can't be done, what is still out there and what is not, or getting mad at your neighbor because you think they may be wrong on the subject. ---------- Thanks!

There is a reset switch on the mother board.

The MB reset switch will clear the BIOS password but will not clear the Windows password.

Google "ubcd reset windows password". This works, but you need to follow the instructions carefully. https://www.top-password.com/blog/reset-forgotten-windows-password-with-ultimate-boot-cd/

Just watched the video and it looks like it will work. CMD brings up a DOS emulator that is part of windows. It takes DOS commands and translates them to Windows operating code so that they can be executed by the machine. Good luck and let us know if you are successful.

Thanks. My daughter -- grandson's mother finally remembered the pass word. It is still good info to know for next time, and in my experience, there will be a next time!

Bridges, glad you got it ironed out. Sounds like your family is about as interesting as mine!
Wouldn’t have it any other way!
