Everyone will be a lot better off, not to mention better informed, if they quit watching TV news.

Due to confusion the FILING and PAYMENT date is July 15, 2020. This was done TODAY.
Things change fast. The IRS has no time to update a website.

Treasury Sec stated this afternoon that President Trump directed filing and payment be July 15. At least it is now settled for today.

Of course! Just get all the news from random people on-line and just believe the ones you agree with!
Turns out that CBS was right - https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-drop/n-20-18.pdf

CBS was right...after the fact.

Mark Twain said, "People who don't read newspapers are uninformed. People who read newspapers are misinformed."

WRONG!

The tax forms must be turned in by April 15, BUT payment of tax due is delayed interest free until July 15. My accountant said yesterday to me that their IRS guidance is that tax forms must be filed by April 15.

WRONG!
The FILING deadline has been extended to July 15th. My state, NY, has followed suit.

The link to the CBS news report has a copy of a 'tweet' from the Treasury Secretary (Steven Mnuchin) saying, "At @realDonaldTrump’s direction, we are moving Tax Day from April 15 to July 15. All taxpayers and businesses will have this additional time to file and make payments without interest or penalties."

The tweet is dated 9:04am, March 20, 2020.

FWIW: Anyone watching the live newscast on pretty much any channel would have seen the announcement as it happened, most newscasts also broadcast the change on the kyron on screen throughout the day.

Because of the Coronavirus Pandemic, the Federal Government has extended filing your Income Tax for 60 days. Due to massive layoffs of mostly small businesses, and a strain on hospitals and medical centers, the stimulant checks, will be delivered to taxpayers before the filing deadline.

Actually it's July 15th.

In fact, the deadline was extended to July 15, not June.

The date for filing and paying Federal Taxes is now July 15:

Some states have already said they will change. I live in Maryland where the filing date is now the same as the Feds, July 15.
