I notice throughout the posts on UHH references to using Topaz and Luminar. Are these "one or the other" plug- ins? If so, what are your thoughts/reasons for preferring one over the other?
No, they can both be used but not simultaneously. They are independent plug-ins and while each offers a different set of capabilities there is some overlap. I like and use both.

Thanks for the information. Now I have to decide which I need more.

Agree plus NIK I-use all three. Not on every image
Personal recommendation (I have both) would be to try Luminar 4 first.

just a few words explaining why to use Luminar first would be helpful....

dpullum - what would be helpful is if you honored my numerous requests to stop commenting on any of my posts.
They can both be used as plug-ins.
I always start in LR because of its catalog and do first editing there. I have found that I almost always do the final editing in Luminar because it is so easy to use. If it had a better catalog system, I’d probably go to it full-time.

It's my understanding that Luminar can be used as either a stand alone or as a PS plug-in. Not sure about Topaz.
If used just as a PS plug-in does either app cost less?
Sorry, yssirk123, I had no knowledge of Luminar, after going to their site I see that it is a good basic editing program with some magic dust added for a few more dollars. So, I apologize, there are those among us who are agitated by this worldwide crisis and are sensitive. My question was not meant to disturb you or question your opinion. My query has been answered by the following website.
My lack of knowledge of Luminar is, as I read, it has been a Mac-only program.

Thanks everyone! This exchange has been helpful as I get more comfortable with post processing, the information you shared will help me make my next steps.
No they are not one or the other plugins. Because I am lazy, I use Luminar 4, Topaz, and NIK as well as Lightroom and Photoshop. I had used Luminar exclusively for easy sky replacements but I now am starting to use more of the features. I use them as plugins with Photoshop. Using layers I mix and match them as necessary
Hope that helped.
They are plug ins but Luminary’s can also come as a stand alone editing program.
