Have a look at the Sirui range

Very good value. I might be biased.

I've yet to see one tripod that does it all, compact, very sturdy, lightweight and if I may add, inexpensive.

True that.

Yes, optimizing one attribute compromises at least one other attribute

LOL, many have bought more than one so that leaves choices depending on our venue.

How literally do you think one should take those advertisements?

I would take them with a large grain of salt. In particular, the ridiculous claim that there is a relationship between tube diameter and maximum usable focal length flies in the face of common sense.

Haha, I wouldn't know anything about that! I will say though that the Feisol 3372 was my best all around.

I'm done!

On my various internet photography travels I came across this site which you, and maybe others, might find useful in your tripod deliberations ......

Interesting, but would be more useful if they actually included the ratings.

Planning to buy a new tripod and would appreciate suggestions as to which, preferably by make and model, of the gazillion models available might suit my needs. No professional-level models, just hobbyist-type. I want one that has a head assembly that traverses vertically as well as horizontally for sky shots, etc.. My present tripod, like my handhold, is rather shaky so steadiness is a must.

I just purchased a Neewer Carbon Fiber tripod on Amazon for $89. It’s very nice has a ball head and one leg becomes a monopod! Nice build quality and is sturdy. Perfect for a hobbyist unless you have big glass.

Obviously, and I’ve said about the same thing in the past, yet some have swallowed it.

I believe, unless you back pack you don't need fiberglass (not that much weight difference). I personally use a tripod the I can see thru the camera -standing up with out the extender up.
I found the best way to buy a tripod is to go to a store with your camera and lens and try them out. You now know the weight, the way the set up works and your comfort zone.

I still have a tripod that my father gave me after he sold his film Minolta SRT-101 about 20 years ago. The tripod is about 40 years old. He bought it new. Aluminum, with a tilt pan head mount. I have two other cheaper aluminum tripods, that were given to me by friends, Surprise gifts I accepted with thanks. One is a Sunpak 52 inch, and the other is a Targus 50 inch. Both are too short for my needs. I have decided to give them away to a Community College Photo Dept., or High School. As an amateur/hobbyist, I won't spend many hundreds of dollars on a tripod. I feel I can get a good, new tripod for less than $200, when I get my next one. But, for professional photographers, I can see purchasing the best, or one of the best available. Your skills get you paid, and mediocre equipment, including a tripod, is not practical.

I believe in the right tool for the job, and have yet to find one tripod that’s suitable for all applications. Photography is much more enjoyable with the right tripod for the camera and lens in use.
