Starting with the expense of the gear (Nikon D850 & Sigma 600 C) and many hours of reading tutorials and watching videos for settings...I had just switched from editing with PicMonkey to Lightroom...Sally and I didn't know what these Red Shouldered Hawks were up to and image #1 was as close as we could approach because there was a canal between us and them. image # 2 was the result of my editing in LR. Image #3 is after editing with Luminar 4. I definitely do not think that the final result is a wall hanger but.....I welcome all comments

Not sure what a Sigma 600 C is....couldn't find it on the internet. As far as the pic....1st off you are way too far away from your subject to get a great picture. Cropping that much takes takes lots of detail from the pic. Also it is best to take pics of birds with the sun at your back so that you can get a catch light in their eyes to make them appear more life like. Just my opinion since you sated "all comments". Your pic is very sharp but they would be so much more detail if you somehow got closer and filled more of your frame with the birds so you would not have to crop so much.

A Sigma 600 Contemporary...As I stated in the post, I couldn't get any closer and it was a cloudy day, the sun WAS AT MY BACK, you completely are not getting the meaning of this post. my technique was correct, my settings were correct, I was as close as I could get, and even though the birds were over the horizon I "salvaged" this photo and got a decent shot of 2 beautiful hawks that were creating others....

So what is the meaning of the post? I took it to be that editing can "save" many photos that are shot at less than optimum distance and conditions. Am I right?

Yep, Linda that's the meaning....while not looking for praise, I wonder if the final image is worth the effort. Only I can deem it worthy for me. Just curious what other members think. Certainly we all have different methodology and to what degree we are willing to go to capture an image.

I might have accomplished what I wanted to know by just posting the final image and see what the reaction would have been....

Comparing the 3, it appears the sky in both #2 and #3 are artificial. #3 is most pleasing to me. Were you able to get a similar background using LR?

I don't know if you intended to post this topic in Gallery, but it started out in main discussion forum. For me that means you wanted more discussion and less simple thumbs-up

Part of the "worth" IMO is how much a photographer enjoys editing overall, as well as how special a particular photo is to that photographer. All personal choices.

For general discussion, your results show how much can be accomplished with quality gear combined with the latest and greatest photo editors after doing the requisite learning. Congrats!

I could not do much with the sky in Lightroom. the sky to me does not look artificial in either 2 or 3 but to each their own...thanks for commenting.

Well said, Linda! I've never seen raptors mating before and having the ability to capture this event is worth it!

I only meant they look artificial after seeing #1.

When I first started using Luminar 4 every sky replacement/enhancement looked artificial comparing it to the original image. It was only after looking at other images with natural sky backgrounds did I feel comfortable manipulating an image.
