Any Idea What Creature This May Be?

I was working this morning and heard a loud, almost distressed animal sound coming from my front yard. So I went out to inspect and found the bird shown below walking around my yard. Since I am very far from being a bird expert, I have no idea if it was just making noise or in some sort of confused state of paranoia. I spent the next 30 minutes pecking around my yard and cul-de-sac before I guess decided it was bored.

But, I decided to throw up some snap shots I took to find out what it is.

Thanks!

That’s a female mallard duck. They can be quite talkative when in the mood.

By the yellow bill, the orange feet and blue on the wing I would venture it to be a female mallard.

Thank you both for the quick response! Yeah, if it is that time of year, it would make sense, because "she" was loud enough I heard it inside. It just caught me off guard as we typically do not have ducks in our neighborhood.

You probably have a lot fewer bugs in you lawn now also. Spring mating and nesting season and those bugs are prime protein to get ready to lay eggs and sit on a nest.

FYI, if you or others grow a vegetable garden, ducks are your friend. As robertjerl notes they will keep your garden pristinely clean of predators wanting to wreck your crops.

Good info to know. Between this one duck and the opossum family that lives in the woods next to my house, my lawn gets a great cleaning of the bugs that love to "try" and destroy my lawn :)

Technically correct, however males do “talk” but very different from the hens. The hens are the “quackers” while the males make a “tucha, tucha” sound. As a former duck and goose hunter I was taught to call many years ago and was taught this by an older expert caller. The male call takes some practice and time to master compared to your basic quack with a call. It was fun learning and seeing it work. Camera only nowadays for me.
